Blizzard COO Talks Console Version Of Diablo III

Despite the fact that Blizzard has yet to properly announce a console version of Diablo III, there’s been no shortage of words from the developer about the console port.

The latest discussion from Blizzard comes from COO Paul Sams in an interview with CVG. In the interview, Sams says that Blizzard is still looking into the possibility of a console port down the line, but Sams stopped short of confirming that a console port will be released.

“We’re continuing to explore [Diablo 3 on consoles],” he said. “We think that the way we built it for the PC may need some tweaking, but it will ultimately be the type of game that can really make sense and be really fun, well polished and a true Blizzard-level experience on a console.”

It wouldn’t be the first time that Blizzard ported over one of its games to consoles, but it would be the first in a long, long time. The complete lack of console ports of its titles may seem like Blizzard just plain prefers PCs and Macs, but Sams explains that it comes down to how Blizzard develops their titles.

“We get a lot of questions about why we haven’t made a game for consoles before and I tell them the same thing I tell them about business models: we don’t let business models or platforms drive our decisions. Those are secondary to what’s the most important aspect for us which is the gameplay.”

Sams continued: “We have to make sure the game is great and it’s something that everyone wants to play. If we provide a great game, a great experience, the business model – if we’re being fair with you – will work.
