Gallagher Retirement: Comedian to Retire After 32 years of Live Performances Following Heart Attack

The comedian Gallagher says he is through with live performances.

The legendary comic, whose full name is Leo Anthony Gallagher, made his retirement announcement official on an Ohio radio station just days after emerging from a medically induced coma.

After a suffering a heart attack on March 14 during a show in Dallas, Gallagher was rushed to the emergency room. He was later diagnosed with a “mild to serious” heart attack and put into a medically-induced coma by doctors.

The comedian’s promotional manager Christine Scherrer confirmed on Sunday that Gallagher had awoken from the coma and was in good spirits as his recovery continued.

Scherrer provided an update to the NY Daily at the time, revealing that Gallagher was officially released from the hospital on Wednesday.

“[Gallagher] is doing great, but still needs time… he is up to his same old antics though,” she said.

Regarding his retirement from the comedy circuit, Gallagher told Ohio radio station WDCM that it would not preclude potential appearances at private events.

One of the most successful comics of the 80s, Gallagher is best known for entertaining crowds with prop comedy that usually involved smashing things with a sledehammer – most commonly, watermelons and other juice-filled fruits.
