Oswald the Lucky Rabbit: Early Walt Disney Drawing Unveiled At “Epic Mickey” Event

Do you recognize the character above? He looks a little bit like Mickey Mouse, right? The drawing was created by Walt Disney in 1928 and shows Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, who was the predecessor to the famous mouse.

The drawing of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was brought out of the Disney vault this week and will be showcased at the unveiling of Disney’s new Wii, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 game “Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two.” The Huffington Post reports that gamers will be able to control either Mickey or Oswald in the new game.

Oswald has appeared in a few early Disney movies but the character was lost in a contract dispute with Universal Studios in 1928. CEO Bob Iger was able to bring the character back in 2006 and he officially returned to the character lineup in 2010’s “Epic Mickey.”

Walt Disney Co. archive director Becky Cline, said:

“We’ve always known about the character and loved him and wished that we could do things with him, but he wasn’t a character that belonged to us… In 2006, we were over the moon when Bob Iger made (the deal).”

Warren Spector, the creative director for “Epic Mickey 2,” said:

“It’s amazing. Everybody at Disney is so proud that he’s back. I’m no different. It’s just so exciting to be a part of bringing that character back into the world and to see people respond so affectionately toward him. Now, to have Mickey and Oswald brothers united to save the world, it’s unbelievable. I feel really privileged.”

The image comes from the 1928 animated short film “Sky Scrappers.” Here’s the original cartoon featuring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
