‘The Vampire Diaries’: Will Nina Dobrev’s Departure Really Mean The Death Of Elena Gilbert?

The Vampire Diaries is gearing up for a monumental season finale later tonight, and the question on everyone’s mind is whether or not Elena Gilbert will live or die.

By now everyone knows that Nina Dobrev, who plays leading lady Elena Gilbert on the hit CW show The Vampire Diaries, is saying farewell to the show after six seasons. For those who saw last week’s action-packed episode, you know that Kia has returned and Elena is currently in a life and death situation.

With tonight’s episode being Nina’s last on the show, and with Elena’s current status, does this mean that fans should break out the tissue box and say goodbye to the show’s central character? According to a previous report by the Inquisitr, the answer is a resounding yes.

Elena Gilbert is dead. Nina Dobrev’s Vampire Diaries character will remain dead, so if you might be thinking she’ll be brought back as a witch or a werewolf, you may as well give up on that pipe dream now,” the Inquisitr reported.

While the site of a coffin in the trailer above seems to confirm that Elena is indeed dead, fans are still holding out hope.

There has been quite a bit of back and forth not only the past few months, but also in the past week on whether or not Nina’s character on The Vampire Diaries will survive the Season 6 finale. Fans are holding out hope that this isn’t the end of Elena, but even the show’s cast and producers are hinting that tonight’s episode will bring a permanent end to Nina’s role as Elena Gilbert.

According to E! News, Michael Trevino, who plays Tyler on The Vampire Diaries and whose final episode is also tonight’s season finale, said that tonight’s episode is a way of permanently ending things for both Nina and Elena.

“It’s an end note for sure,” Trevino tells E! News. “It’s a big period at the end of the sentence, if you will. It’s beautiful. As we know, Nina Dobrev is leaving our show so we put a stamp of an ending there for our beloved Elena.”

So is Elena really being killed off? Vampire Diaries producer Julie Plec wasn’t sure how to answer the big question because she didn’t want to give anything away.

“I don’t know how to answer that without either hinting a yes or hinting a no. I’ll just say that we’re very happy with the choice we made about how to handle her character’s departure. We’ll see if everyone agrees.”

So what about Nina? What has she had to say since announcing her departure from the show? Despite the rumors that the show had to find a way to dispose of its central character thanks to Nina’s departure, Nina and Plec have said that this plot twist was a long time coming, according to Entertainment Weekly.

“It’s not something we decided last minute. It’s been a couple years, I’d say. Not that I knew for sure. I knew that the character would go on a journey — and yes, this is a show about vampires, but ultimately, I’m a human and I have to go live my human life now. Six years is a very long, great, great time. We did more than 100 episodes, which is in my eyes considered a huge success,” said Nina.

So will Elena die after tonight’s episode of The Vampire Diaries? Guess you’ll just have to tune in tonight to the CW to find out!
