ArenaNet Details Guild Wars 2 Microtransactions

As you’re likely already aware, ArenaNet’s Guild Wars 2 MMO will launch at some point this year and will be completely free of the once-standard subscription model for MMOs. Now, thanks to a post on the official website, we have a few more details on how that will be handled.

“We think players should have the opportunity to spend money on items that provide visual distinction and offer more ways to express themselves,” ArenaNet’s Mike O’Brien said on the developer’s blog.

“They should also be able to spend money on account services and on time-saving convenience items. But it’s never OK for players to buy a game and not be able to enjoy what they paid for without additional purchases, and it’s never OK for players who spend money to have an unfair advantage over players who spend time.”

Some of the microtransaction items include trinkets that will make, say, leveling up your character a bit easier for a certain amount of time. Additionally, various “account services” will be offered to players who don’t mind forking over some cash. Most microtransactions will be purchasable by all players, however.

In Guild Wars 2, there’s three main forms of currecncy: Gold, which you get for the completion of quests and what not; Karma, a currency that allows players to purchase unique, non-tradable in-game items; and Gems, which is the currency used for purchasing microtransaction items.

Interestingly, the system allows for trading Gems for in-game Gold, and vice versa. This essentially means that you’ll be able to buy virtual currency with real-life money without having to go through a third-party company to do so.
