CBS Orders ‘Criminal Minds’ Spinoff After Canceling ‘Battle Creek’ And More

CBS has joined in with the renewal and cancelation news lately, along with updates on new shows coming to the network. A number of current shows are facing cancelation, including Battle Creek and The McCarthys. However, to fill the gaps created, there will be some new shows coming to the network. One of those will be a spinoff on fan favorite Criminal Minds.

For many Criminal Minds fans, it is about time a spinoff was announced. Other major TV shows, like CSI and NCIS, received spinoffs fairly early on. Criminal Minds seems to have been left behind, despite its similarity to the other shows. It will be called Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.

While Entertainment Weekly says that the news is not official, IGN reports that CBS has now confirmed that Battle Creek is definitely not returning. It was only introduced last year and was giving the green light because of the success of Breaking Bad; it was by the same team. The McCarthys has also been confirmed and was expected considering it was pulled from CBS earlier this year. The news of the cancelation was just a formality.

Two other shows expected to be canceled are Stalker and The Following. Both are by The Vampire Diaries executive producer Kevin Williamson, who has recently taken a step back from the vampire show; that is now mainly run by Caroline Dries and Julie Plec.

According to Deadline, the new shows have officially been confirmed by CBS. The Criminal Minds spinoff will be joined by a medical drama Code Black as well as a comedy Life In Pieces. CBS has also previously confirmed that new show Supergirl will make an appearance. There will be five new drama series, which means that other shows need to get the chop to make room for them.

It is a bad time for some TV show producers. This is always the time of year that most of the shows are either canceled or renewed. CBS is still to announce the shows that are definitely being renewed, but it is relatively easy to tell based on those that have already been given the cancelation order.

CBS has high standards when it comes to viewing figures; much higher than some other networks. For example, the likes of The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural would never survive on the network when they struggle to see six million viewers per episode. It makes it harder for slow shows like Battle Creek and Stalker to remain on CBS with that high standard.
