‘The Voice’: Spanish Priest Sings Like An Angel [Videos]

Spanish priest, Father Damián María has wowed audiences in Spain’s version of the singing competition The Voice, as the 28-year-old “hipster priest” blasted out an amazing rendition of Robbie Williams’ classic song “Angels.”

Father Damián is well known in Madrid as being “el cura hipster,” or in English the “hipster priest.” He has recently entertained the country during his audition for The Voice by singing the Robbie Williams classic, included above.

The young priest passed the first stage with flying colors, based solely on his vocal performance. The video of his audition is going viral on YouTube, with over a quarter million views in just a couple of days.

Tweet translation: “The Father has something special!”

Hailing from Granada in the south of Spain, the hipster priest now works in the Perpetuo Socorro parish in Madrid. A modern-day and up-to-date Catholic priest, Father Damián makes full use of the social media with accounts on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram, and can even be found on SoundCloud.

According to the Local, the San Antón church where he preaches is also one of the most hip in Spain, offering a “pets welcome” message and even free WiFi.

Now the hipster priest even has his own fan club named after his catchphrase on the TV program, “siente los latidos” or “feel the beat.” Thursday this week saw him singing against fellow contestant Antonio, battling it out face to face with the song “Love me Again” in a boxing ring.

As interest grows in the singing priest, more information about him is coming to light. It seems Father Damián has volunteered in India and Honduras in the past and longs to return to India one day.

The hipster priest was inspired to sing by his grandmother, who was a talented flamenco singer, and his favorite singers are Adele, Beyonce, and Robbie Williams. He also has a penchant for the movie The Lion King and would apparently love to sing in a Disney film.

Below is a rendition of the song “Hallelujah” by Father Damián. It is unknown how he got hold of a guitar strap marked “Department of Corrections.”

While this is the first time a priest has taken part in a singing contest in Spain, the Inquisitr reported a while back on an Italian nun, Sister Cristina, who won The Voice in Italy. The 26-year-old has released an album including a surprisingly unlikely cover of Madonna’s song, “Like a Virgin.”
