Sigourney Weaver Busy Reprising ‘Avatar,’ ‘Alien’ Roles

Sigourney Weaver will be busy the next few months in roles she has done before.

Cinema Blend is reporting that Weaver, 65, will return to reprise her role of Dr. Grace Augustine in the upcoming Avatar 2. One question arises from this casting news – didn’t Dr. Grace Augustine die in the original Avatar? Well, yes, Weaver’s character did, but, as producer James Cameron said, “Nobody dies in a science fiction movie.”

The word surrounding the Avatar producer is that Cameron has at least four sequels, in script form, ready to go. It is uncertain if Weaver will be reincarnated for the other sequels, but Weaver is most certainly coming back for the second installment.

It has been reported that the reason that Weaver’s Dr. Augustine is returning, and more specifically, how she is returning, will be explained in the second installment. Weaver’s Dr. Augustine’s return to the sequel was reported less than three months after Avatar’s release in 2009. Given the relationship Weaver has with Cameron, dating back to their Aliens days, there should be no question Weaver will be back.

The sequel is scheduled for release in 2017. Ongoing delays have pushed back the release date for the highly anticipated sequel. The original movie became the highest grossing movie of all time, with $2.788 billion in box office receipts.

According to the Venture Capital Post, Weaver is also reprising her role as Ellen Ripley in the Aliens series, but it won’t necessarily be Ellen Ripley herself.

The word surrounding the fifth installment of Aliens is that Weaver’s Ripley will return as a cross-breed human alien. It is also thought that this installment of the Alien series will provide closure to Ripley’s character. Weaver herself feels as if the series is incomplete.

“Had we done a fifth one (earlier), I don’t question that her mankind would have won… I do feel like there is more story to tell,” Weaver said.

The interesting part of Weaver coming back to the Aliens series with Neil Blomkamp is that Ridley Scott is busy working on Prometheus 2, a prequel/reboot that Fox studios is currently working on. It seems while Scott and company are working on telling the beginning, Weaver is focused on bringing closure to the series.

Blomkamp has also stated that the fifth installment will basically eschew Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection, and continue from Alien 2. If all goes according to plan, the fifth and last installment starring Weaver will be released around 2020.
