Earlier this week, Jon Hamm made a few comments about reality TV stars. Hamm, the star of “Mad Men” said that people like Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton get rewarded for being stupid. Well, Ms. Kardashian went to Twitter today to remind Hamm that she has her own show and owns several businesses.
“Calling someone who runs their own businesses, is a part of a successful TV show, produces, writes, designs, and creates, ‘stupid,’ is in my opinion careless…
But Kardashian didn’t want to start a fight. The reality star said:
“I respect Jon, and I am a firm believer that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and that not everyone takes the same path in life. We’re all working hard, and we all have to respect one another.”
In Hamm’s defense, he didn’t exactly call Kardashian stupid. Hamm seemed to be taking issue with the idea that our culture rewards stupidity. Of course, he did choose Kardashian as his prime example of this phenomenon. Hamm said:
“Whether it’s Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian or whoever, stupidity is certainly celebrated. Being a [expletive] idiot is a valuable commodity in this culture… You’re rewarded significantly.”
What do you think of John Hamm’s viewpoint toward reality stars? Do you think Kim Kardashian is stupid? Or is Kim smart for being able to turn her fame into several businesses?
