Dame Judi Dench isn’t going blind. The British actress revealed earlier this week that she is suffering from a degenerative eye condition but said that the story has been exaggerated in the media.
Dench released a statement today saying that she was not going blind. In an email to Reuters, Dench said:
“In response to the numerous articles in the media concerning my eye condition – macular degeneration – I do not wish for this to be overblown. This condition is something that thousands and thousands of people all over the world are having to contend with. It’s something that I have learnt to cope with and adapt to – and it will not lead to blindness.”
Dench, now 77, may not be going completely blind but she admits that the condition is leading to some trouble. The Oscar winning actress told the Daily Mirror on Saturday that she can no longer read scripts. Dench said:
“I can’t read scripts anymore because of the trouble with my eyes. Somebody comes in and reads them to me, like telling me a story.”
Dench’s eyesight may be deteriorating but she has no plans of slowing down her career. Dench is currently filming the latest James Bond movie, “Skyfall,” and already has a movie lined up for 2013.
