Amber Portwood Dishes On Gary Shirley Relationship

Amber Portwood was feuding heavily with Gary Shirley, the father of her 6-year-old daughter, Leah, when fans last saw her on Teen Mom. However, according to a new interview, things have gotten better between them in the last couple of years.

On March 21, Amber Portwood spoke to People Magazine, updating fans on her relationship with Shirley, and gushing over her new fiancé, 43-year-old Matthew Baier.

“We’re co-parenting the best that we can. It’s not perfect and [Shirley] still gets on my nerves, but we’re happy with the people we’re with.”

After Amber Portwood and Gary Shirley split years ago, Portwood entered prison to serve a five-year term. Once she was released early, in November of 2013, she met and fell in love with Baier, and the two became engaged during filing on Teen Mom OG. Meanwhile, Shirley moved on with Kristina Anderson, who is now expecting his second child (she also has an older child from a previous relationship).

“He’s amazing, funny, caring, and loving,” Amber Portwood said of Baier.

While Shirley has already planned for a family with his new girlfriend, Portwood claims she and Baier are taking things slow, and not planning to walk down the aisle for at least a year.

“We want to be engaged for at least a year before we really jump into anything. We want everything in place.”

As the Inquisitr previously reported, Amber Portwood was recently accused of staging her and Baier’s engagement in an effort to attract viewers to Teen Mom OG. In an interview with MTV News, Portwood set the record straight, claiming she and Baier were the real deal.

“I don’t stage things for [the cameras]. I live my life. MTV follows me — I don’t follow them. Everything that is seen on ‘Teen Mom OG’ is our lives, and this is the way it is. We’ve never tried to do anything to please others. It’s our lives to help others — it’s not just for TV.”

Amber Portwood also confirmed she and Baier’s relationship is much more stable than her relationship with Shirley was years ago.

“I think people are trying to compare this relationship with mine and Gary’s in the past, and it doesn’t even compare. People just need to accept that I’m happy, and I have a good life with my fiancé now.”
