Kanye West Breaks Down In Tears While Discussing Late Mentor [Video]

By now, we know that Kanye West is a very emotional artist. He’s been very outspoken at often the wrong times, and he never truly holds back when he has something to say. That said, this is an extremely candid moment that not many people have seen from West.

During a recent interview with BBC Radio 1, West became so emotional when discussing his late mentor that he broke down in tears. In its entire 43 minutes, the interview spans many topics from his “FourFiveSeconds” song with Rihanna to Paul McCartney, to his family life, but it’s speaking about his late fashion mentor Louise Wilson that catches even West off guard.

During the interview, Kanye was comparing designers who inspire him to create a top of the line product, no matter what it is — fashion, music, or otherwise. He eventually landed on his late mentor Louise Wilson, who he often supported, and gave him advice knowing that she was going to pass.

West took a deep breath and reminisced about her final meeting with him. “She just wanted to give me some words of advice moving forward, and she was asking me about my daughter, asked me about my wife… and she said, you know, ‘So many students, they don’t give it their all, and the problem is, soon as they do anything halfway good when they’re 2 years old, 3 years old, their parents clap.'”

After interviewer Zane Lowe and West had a laugh at the idea of not clapping for children, the hip hop artist continued with the story and grew more emotional the longer he went on until he eventually dissolved into tears.

“I didn’t know we were going to lose her… and she told me, she said, you know, ‘Thank you for the times where I came to performances and this has like really meant a lot to me, with…'”

Visibly upset, West covered his face and Lowe called for a minute as he attempted to comfort him. The interview was put on hold for a few minutes so Kanye could find his composure. When West returned he said with a smile, “That’s never happened to me in an interview before.”
