Guild Wars 2 confirmed for 2012 release, more beta events coming

Guild Wars 2 feels like it’s been in development forever, and yet ArenaNet has yet to give the game a release date. That hasn’t changed, unfortunately, but the developer did at least confirm in a post on the official website that the game is on track to release later this year.

On the bright side, you may not have to wait that long to get a chance to try the game out. The developer said in the post that, now that the first closed beta test has wrapped up, the developer is gearing up to launch “progressively larger” beta events.

“We recently finished our first closed beta test, and we’re now ready to hold progressively larger events,” wrote ArenaNet president Mike O’Brien. “In February we’ll invite select press to participate in beta testing, and in March and April we’ll aggressively ramp up the size of our beta test events so that many of you will have a chance to participate. And of course, this all leads to the release of Guild Wars 2 later this year.”

It’s a little disappointing that we still don’t have a release date for Guild Wars 2, but at least we know that there will be more than one opportunity to try out a beta version of the game.
