Snoop Dogg Is Branded A ‘Misogynist Wretch’ By An Irish Judge

Gangster rapper Snoop Dogg is no stranger to controversy. The rapper once claimed he smoked pot in the White House, but the Daily Mail is reporting what must surely be the most bizarre criticism of the rapper to date.

Snoop Dogg, whose real name is Calvin Broadus Jr. and is also known as Snoop Lion, played a concert in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, last October. A young woman, Simone Campbell, 18, was arrested by police as she made her way home from Snoop Dogg’s show. She was drunk after consuming eight glasses of wine and “a quantity” of Captain Morgan spiced rum. During her trial, Campbell admitted punching a police officer on the ear, as well as resisting arrest as she tried to make her way home from the gig. Judge Barney McElholm sentenced Campbell to 12 months probation, but he reserved his criticism for Snoop Dogg.

The Independent reports that Judge McElholm launched into an extraordinary attack on Snoop Dogg, calling him a “misogynist wretch.”

Imposing sentence on Campbell Judge McElholm said, “Despite the bad behaviour espoused by his [Snoop Dogg] lyrics there was no excuse for this. Why any woman would want to go to a concert to listen to this misogynist wretch escapes me. Why he was allowed into the country in the first place is another matter.”

The Belfast Telegraph claims that Snoop Dogg’s concert in Derry was not without controversy. The Foyle Women’s Aid organization had protested and called for the concert to be cancelled because of Snoop Dogg’s reputation.

At the time a spokesperson for the organization said, “His lyrics are demeaning and they objectify women and he has a history with drugs.”

Snoop Dogg has a long history of controversy. During the 1990s, he was one of the biggest names in the gangster rap movement that created a moral panic across America. In 2006, he was banned from the UK for four years after a scuffle at Heathrow Airport which led to him spending a night in the cells.

Despite Snoop Dogg selling over 30 million albums worldwide, he was refused a work visa in 2007 to allow him to tour the U.K. following his arrest on suspicion of drugs offenses. The ban was lifted in 2010, but it is reported that some of Snoop Dogg’s entourage are still banned from flying with British Airways.

Barney McElholm, the judge who attacked Snoop Dogg, has a history for odd remarks during court cases. In 2011, he claimed that young men are too fascinated by martial arts and Ninja Turtles as he sentenced a man for putting a police officer in a headlock.
