Sam Smith: Soulful Star Brings Philadelphia Crowd To Tears In ‘Best Show’ Ever

The performance of Sam Smith at the sold out Liacouras Center, Philadelphia, on Tuesday has been hailed as “sensational.”

Less than a week into his first major tour, Smith had the 10,000 crowd in tears with his unique, soulful voice and moving lyrics. Although Smith has but one album under his belt, his ascent to super-stardom is moving at breakneck speed with no sign of slowing down.

Smith wowed the audience in a confident, charged performance, belting out favorites from his debut album, In The Lonely Hour. Philly.com reported how Smith “gave the audience jittery soul” in the track “Nirvana,” and in the acoustic ballad “I’ve Told You Now,” Smith “managed to sound both indignant and tenderly wounded.”

At the tender age of 22, and already nominated for six Grammys, there appears to be no limits to what Sam Smith can achieve in his music career.

Still retaining a sense of wonder and innocence, yet displaying the surety and confidence of a veteran star performer, Smith already has crowds in the palm of his hand.

“I’ve worked hard to get to this point. I’ve trained for this for a long time.”

He is untouched by fads or trends, preferring to let his range of vocal talents capture the attention of those who normally ignore young pop stars that perform love songs.

Indeed, Smith is at his most commanding and spellbinding when it comes to heartbreak.

“We still relate to a love song since we’re either in love, yearning for love or reminiscing about love. Love is the strongest emotion that you can have, and there is something about unrequited love. Everyone has been through it.”

Smith’s throwback Philadelphia performance was one which transcended genres with the Intelligencer reporting how “prepubescent girls screamed whenever Smith waved” and how “grown men and women sang along with their new favorite pop star.”

And it wasn’t just the Philly crowd that were touched by the event. Smith has also tweeted and posted that the show was the “best so far,” and that the reception rendered him “absolutely speechless.”

With his tour underway, it is clear that Sam Smith is a hugely talented singer and natural performer heading right to the top of the music industry.
