Lena Dunham Reveals How She Makes Being A Celebrity Feel Less ‘Gross’

When Lena Dunham scored her hit show GIRLS, the transition must have been extremely hard. There’s a difference between receiving critical response on a small scale for an indie film like Tiny Furniture and scoring your own successful show on HBO with comedy’s most sought after producer-writer Judd Apatow cheering from the stands.

Virtually overnight everyone came to know Lena Dunham’s name. People who loved her called her a wunderkind and the voice of her generation, while others shrugged their shoulders. Either way, dodging Dunham’s polarizing name, face, and at times, nudist exhibition wasn’t an option.

Now a celebrity in her own right, Dunham sat down with ELLE magazine to discuss how she made being a celebrity feel less “gross.” The always candid writer, producer, and actress discussed her relationship with the word during the interview.

“I realized early on that I was not going to be able to have a comfortable relationship with celebrity if I didn’t feel like I was using it to talk about things that were important to me.”

She continued, “It was always going to make me feel gross, for lack of a better word. I was like, ‘Oh, this attention is something I’m going to figure out how to use in a way that feels productive, healthy, and smart. And not just like as an excuse to collect handbags.’ Although… I love handbags.”

So far, Lena has kept her word by writing her book, Not That Kind of Girl. In most of the book, she writes about her everyday insecurities and is an advocate for sexual assault victims by writing about her own story.

ELLE’s editor-in-chief, Robbie Myers, discussed what makes Dunham so special.

“It’s extraordinary to be able to watch a polymath at the start of what will be a life of incredible influence on the way women are understood and apportioned power, and to be with her simply as a fan and supporter of what she has and will have to say.”

The fourth season of GIRLS begins on January 11 on HBO.
