Australia Is Now A ‘Nation Of Victims’ Thanks To Strict Gun Control

Over the past five years or so, the United States has been more active pertaining to the gun control versus gun rights argument. However, this year has seen a shift in favor for the latter. The Inquisitr reported on news that Americans favored the Second Amendment far more than security as proven by the latest Pew Poll.

Despite this, individuals with money and power often use their wealth and influence to propagandize their own personal agenda to the voters. Bill Gates used his status as a the world’s richest person and one million of his own dollars to challenge the National Rifle Association (NRA) and support a new law to implement even more gun control in Washington State, a challenge he would win. The former Mayor of New York City, also a billionaire, donated over a million dollars to help pass the new gun control law, even though he is not a resident of the state of Washington.

Nevertheless, there are now people who see the fallacies in gun control such as a Senator in Australia who stated that because of gun control, Australia is now a “nation of victims.”

Australia
David Leyonhjelm, the Senator for New South Wales (NSW), Australia, supports giving citizens the ability to arm themselves.

According to ABC Australia, David Leyonhjelm, the Senator for the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW), made a statement that citizens are unable to properly protects themselves with weapons. This is in response to the terror attack at the Lindt Cafe in Sydney on December 15th. At 9:44 a.m., Man Haron Monis held up a shotgun and began a 16-hour hostage crisis known as the Sydney Siege. It would also cost the lives of Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson.

To David Leyonhjelm, the results to the situation would have been different if citizens were allowed to arm themselves. Leyonhjelm even referenced certain states in the US too.

“What happened in that cafe would have been most unlikely to have occurred in Florida, Texas, or Vermont, or Alaska in America, or perhaps even Switzerland as well. Statistically speaking, one or two of the victims would have had a concealed gun. That nutcase [Man Haron Monis] who held them all hostage wouldn’t have known they were armed and bad guys don’t like to be shot back at.”

As a result of the Liberal Party’s strong stance on strengthening gun control, David Leyonhjelm left them and is now a member of the Shooters Party, according to an article by The Guardian. Leyonhjelm also states that instead of moving forward to give citizens the right to protect themselves, certain parties – specifically the Greens – are standing firm on gun control, making the Sydney Siege an example of what happens when someone unstable is able to obtain a gun. The Greens also want the joint NSW and federal inquiry into the siege to focus largely on how Man Haron Monis was able to obtain a gun in the first place.

Greens acting leader, Adam Bandt, confirmed such a stance through the following public statement he gave.

“This is a tragedy and shows what happens when someone who is unstable gets access to a gun. How did someone who had mental health issues, who is charged with being accessory to murder, get a gun?”

Right now, there is a review being conducted on the Sydney Siege, and it is hoped the investigation will answer the questions that Adam Bandt asked in his anti-gun comments. The results of the review will be posted by the end of January 2015.
