Why Is Sam Smith Hiding Out In Australia?

Sam Smith, arguably one of the most popular artists to emerge this year, admitted that he plans on spending his holidays in Australia to avoid family arguments. In an interview with The Daily Mirror, Smith talked at length about his relationship with his family.

“I have argued with my family every New Year’s Eve for 10 years,” he began. “So I’m going to travel to the other side of the world and strap myself to a tree so I can’t argue with anyone.”

Smith added, “It’s not huge arguments, but when all my family drink a bit and you’ve been together for 10 days over Christmas, at the end you all start arguing. It’s just like any family.” Despite the constant family rows, Smith revealed that he’s extremely close to his parents Katie and Frederick. He also revealed that he has written a song about his parents’ divorce, and claimed that it reduced his family to tears. “It’s a song about my mum and dad splitting up. I played it to all my family and they have been in tears every time they listen to it,” Smith said in the interview.

And while the song made his family bawl, he admits that the divorce was actually the best thing that could have happened to their family.

“My parents split up when I was 18. I had the most amazing experience of divorce. They are still best friends, it wasn’t really sad. The whole concept through the time they split up was, ‘If you are happy, I am happy’. We are happier now they are apart because they are happier, whereas before they weren’t in love with each other,” Smith said.

Smith plans on including the song on his next album which, sadly, won’t be released next year because he’ll be touring until September, 2015. He talked about how he had to ask for his family’s blessing to use the song because of its personal subject matter.

Smith said, “The song is about how far we have come. It is quite an intense song, so I had to ring them up and ask them if it was OK to play it to my management. It is very personal. They were amazing about it. It’s a song I can’t wait for people to hear. I really think a lot of people are going to relate to it.”

It has been a great year for Sam Smith. The “Stay with Me” singer is up for six Grammy Awards, and his album In the Lonely Hour is considered as one of the year’s best releases.
