Sam Smith will be in the lonely hour no more. The pop sensation has announced that he’s finally found himself a boyfriend.

According to the Daily Mail, Sam Smith is dating one of the extras from his music video for “Like I Can.” Sam met the guy on the set of the video, and got to know him over the course of the past few months. While Sam and his new beau are still in the early phases of the relationship, Sam seems excited to share the news of his boyfriend with the world.

“It’s very early days,” Sam Smith said. “I’m talking very, very, very early days. But he’s really sweet. I met him on the video for ‘Like I Can,’ he was one of 20 extras.”

By “very early,” Sam actually means he’s not sure the two are technically dating, because he hasn’t spoken to his new man about the status of their relationship.

Smith told Dan Wootton from the Sun, “It’s a surreal thing to be talking about because I haven’t even confirmed with him that we’re officially seeing each other.”

Sam Smith has become known for his songs about unrequited love. He revealed that his critically acclaimed album In The Lonely Hour was about a man he fell in love with who didn’t love him back. Since then, Sam Smith has been sharing a lot about his personal life, including his reasons for coming out as gay, and the five things he still wants from life — even though he’s already an international pop star. Of course, one of those life goals included finding a husband. So Smith and his supporters will have to hope that this “sweet” extra from “Like I Can” turns out to be the one Sam is looking for, although it might completely change the charm of Sam’s infamously emotional music.

In fact, Sam Smith recently admitted he doesn’t think he can ever produce a positive album because he claims he’ll never be completely happy, according to Design Trend. Like many pop stars, Smith seems to rely on his love and emotions to fuel his songwriting process, so this new relationship could be doomed from the start or could threaten the notorious gloom of Smith’s songs.

“But people need to realize I’m never going to be happy,” Smith said. “The reason I do what I do is because I’m an artist who is always going to be blue about something. It’s just the way I am –– I’m an emotional person.”

Sam Smith even went so far as to tell MTV that he might consider dumping his boyfriend in order to write a new album, although he was almost certainly kidding about that.

“I’m just going to try to fall in love and make them dump me so I can write another record,” said Sam.
