‘Final Fantasy VII’ Coming to PlayStation 4, But It’s Not What Fans Want [Video]

Final Fantasy seems to be a never ending saga. There have been recent announcements from Square Enix of a PC version of XII-2 and of a demo for Final Fantasy XV. Now, today at PlayStation Experience 2014, Square Enix Producer Sinji Hashimoto announced that Final Fantasy VII will find it’s way onto the PS4 in Spring 2015.

VII is widely considered one of the greatest RPGs out there, turning many players into lovers of the genre. When released in 1997 for the original PlayStation, it was met with much critical acclaim. Now, almost 20 years later, fans still beg for more, asking Square Enix to release it for the PS4.

And they finally got their wish, sort of.

Well, that was anti-climatic.

Final Fantasy VII has not been remastered, remade, or really upgraded in any way. The PS4 version is a port of the PC edition that was released a few years ago. According to Digital Trends, not much was added to the PC version when it was converted to for the PS4.

“The Windows port of FF7 didn’t add anything significant to the game. Higher resolution, smoother performance, achievements. The only thing close to a gameplay change is a character booster that cuts down on the need for grinding.”

Needless to say, some people are not pleased. Jason Schreier over at Kotaku is calling the release an “ultimate troll” on gamers. Trolling on the internet is intentionally doing or saying something to cause an argument or disruption.

“No HD remake here. We’re just getting the PC version to buy again on PS4. In spring 2015. For some reason. Thanks, Square Enix”

Yes, thanks, Square Enix, indeed. With the capabilities that the PS4 has, Final Fantasy fans hoped for something more exciting. Instead, they are left with the same blocky characters and no HD remake.

Schreier isn’t the only one calling out Square Enix on their Final Fantasy VII troll.

Mitch and others have found the humor in the situation.

Fans however are left disappointed and distraught over the announcement.

A PS4 version of Final Fantasy VII is what fans wanted. But they wanted a remake, something to match up with expectations of games today.

Do you think Square Enix took the easy way out? Is this move going to be a huge mistake for the company? Will you be buying Final Fantasy VII for the PS4 when it comes out?
