David Guetta ‘Listen’ Reviews: Is The DJ’s New EDM Album Any Good?

David Guetta is hoping EDM fans will shell out their hard-earned cash for his new album, Listen, when it hits retail shelves on November 24. Here’s the question: Is the French DJ’s latest record worth your money this holiday season?

At this stage, most people have made up their minds about electronic dance music. Either you’re ready to blast the music from your car, or you’re willing to strangle your friends for even suggesting its inclusion on your playlist. Judging from the early reviews for Guetta’s most recent effort, David probably won’t bring any new fans into the fold.

According to the Telegraph, David Guetta didn’t pack Listen with an abundance of heart and soul. Although the DJ set out to make an extremely personal album, reviewer Neil McCormick seems to think Guetta fell short of that lofty goal.

“Guetta has described it as a creative departure, but while it favours formally structured songs over the repeated chord patterns and dance-floor peaks and drops of previous offerings that’s just a sign of Guetta staying on trend. He has also called it his “most personal” work and, if so, it suggests his personality is that of an immature hedonist.”

Ouch. While the Telegraph poured a little water on David Guetta’s dance-friendly fire, the folks over at USA Today were a bit more positive. Brian Mansfield, who gave the record three out of a possible four stars, believes the DJ has stepped up his game considerably for his latest studio outing. While other artists are content to churn out the same dance floor-oriented tracks, Guetta apparently wants to give his fans something a little different.

“Three years ago, with ‘Nothing but the Beat,’ Guetta practically defined EDM for the mainstream. Now, he brings new meaning with ‘Listen,’ and this time, it’s as much a treat for the ears as for the feet.”

Even if EDM fanatics walk away from Listen feeling a little underwhelmed, Guetta doesn’t seem to have any regrets. The Inquisitr previously reported that the DJ is pretty proud of the songs he’s assembled for his latest record. However, Guetta warned folks up front that his latest batch of tunes would be a little different from his past endeavors.

“All I can say is that it’s completely song-based. There are featured artists of course, but none that you’d expect with me, and really it’s just completely different from anything I’ve done before. That’s why it has taken almost three years. It’s just different. Like I have this record ‘Lovers on the Sun’ that’s out right now and it’s doing amazing, but it’s still comparable to other records I’ve done. This next album has tracks I couldn’t compare to any other record.”

Are you planning to pick up a copy of David Guetta’s Listen on November 24? Do you worry that the DJ has strayed too far from his formula?
