Kristen Stewart’s Nip Slip Is NBD To Fans

When Kristen Stewart went onstage to present an award to her Still Life costar Julianne Moore, the 24 year old actress was most likely unaware that she was about to become the latest in a series of Hollywood wardrobe malfunctions. Stewart’s dramatic reveal seems to be trending more slowly than the news that Robert Pattison is about to introduce Kristen to his new girlfriend, FKA Twigs. Perhaps, Kristen Stewart’s nip slip is just not as dramatic as a similar situation was ten years ago?

The most famous wardrobe malfunction of the modern world–sorry to tell you, Kristen–is probably that of Janet Jackson. At Superbowl XXXVIII, Janet Jackson took the stage for the halftime show. Something went wrong with her costume, and her breast was exposed by Justin Timberlake for about half a second in the scandal that rocked the United States for weeks afterwards. In the aftermath of the incident, the term “wardrobe malfunction” was coined.

In September of this year, Beyoncé performed at the Global Citizens Festival, where her energetic dancing popped her blouse open and exposed her bra. Some critics of Kristen Stewart’s malfunction have pointed out that her dress was designed to ride very low on her chest, with a see-through tank top covering her shoulders and upper chest. Perhaps this shielding is what’s kept the news from overwhelming the media?

While Stewart seemed to just keep her arms still and tried not to make the situation any worse by fidgeting, when “Let It Go” singer Idina Menzel was told by fans on June 16th that her breast was visible, she made light of the situation. Warning, Menzel does drop an F-bomb after joking about how “these divas need their stage,” a play on her lines from a song in Rent.

And, because articles about these sorts of wardrobe malfunctions all too often focus on women like Kristen Stewart, let’s all remember that in 2013, Robert Downey Jr, darling of the Iron Man and Avengers franchise, once walked the red carpet at the Iron Man 3 premiere with his fly all the way down. Maybe, it’s because there’s less to check (and expose!) when one puts on a tux or maybe it has to do with the more extreme drama of women’s fashion; hard to say.

Although, if you want some examples of the kinds of wardrobe issues that can happen in professional sports, UK blog SoSoGay is happy to oblige.
