Wayne Static Dies: Static X Frontman Dead At 48, Overdose Suspected


Wayne Static died on Saturday evening, just before the longtime Static X frontman was set to take his new band on tour.

There was little information on the circumstances surrounding Static’s death, though some close to the singer have hinted that it was related to his substance abuse. Papa Roach frontman Jacoby Shaddix bemoaned Statics death, writing, “addiction is real and takes fools out.”

The band Static X announced Static’s death with a message to its Facebook page:

Platinum selling musician Wayne Richard Wells, better known as WAYNE STATIC, passed away at the age of 48.

WAYNE STATIC was the enigmatic former frontman and namesake of Static-X, who later forged a successful solo career. Wayne was scheduled to co-headline tours with Powerman 5000 and Drowning Pool over the next several months.

No additional information is available at this time.

On Saturday dozens in the hard rock and metal world spoke out, expressing their condolences to Static’s family and mourning his loss.

“Rest in peace, Wayne,” wrote Korn frontman Jonathan Davis. “I’m speechless right now. I’m losing to many of my friends. I’ll see you on the other side, brother.”

Others remembered Static’s influence on the metal scene.

Miguel “Meegs” Rascon of Coal Chamber wrote:

“Wayne, this was the one photo taken when we were on tour with you with WE ARE THE RIOT. So happy I have this. You were part of the nu metal movement that shaped the metal scene in L.A. with COAL CHAMBER and countless others. We were a scene. Untouchable. Family. Hungry… I will miss you, brother. RIP. I’m your homeboy forever, wherever you are. Much love.”

Static X formed in 1994 and released six studio albums during a 10-year stretch from 1999 to 2009. The band found success in its debut album, Wisconsin Death Trip, which went platinum.

Wayne Static later started a solo career, and his solo act was set to co-headline a tour with Powerman 5000 this week.

Static was known for his appearance, with his signature hair spiked to stand straight up.

There is not yet official word on the cause of death for Wayne Static.
