Don’t Believe In Ghosts? This Video From A New Mexico Police Station May Change Your Mind [Video]

A police station security camera captured an unidentified presence in Espanola, New Mexico.

According to the report, detective Karl Romero was watching the camera footage of his police station’s surroundings when he spotted a light-colored, almost see-through figure move like a person across the screen and through a chain-link fence. However, Romero says there is no way that the object could have been a human. The area was completely secure as the gates were locked. Should someone have made his way into the yard, an alarm would have sounded.

Neither the gate was open or the alarm sounding when Romero saw the eerie figure. Romero reported the incident to supervisors who also looked into the case. According to Good Housekeeping, all normal explanations for figures such as this were checked out. Lighting tricks, dust, or bugs on or near the cameras have all been ruled out and police have thoroughly checked their equipment. Authorities still can’t explain what appeared on this video.

However, Discovery thinks they have the answer, noting that a closer look at the video reveals that the ghostly blur doesn’t go through the objects in the background as claimed (such as the fence) but instead goes over them — a sign that the “ghost” is close to the camera (such as on the camera lens), not out in the secured police yard. Furthermore, the object’s scale is all wrong: Assuming — as people often report and claim — that the “ghost” is human-sized, what appears in the police video is far too small to be human. At one point when it moves over the silhouette of a metal fence post, it appears about the same size — which would be about three inches in diameter.

The fact that the object is out of focus is also revealing; the police surveillance camera is set up to record objects in the yard, not on its lens. Anything on the lens would appear out of focus and translucent, exactly like the ghost in the video. So what was captured on camera at the Espanola police department? All evidence suggests that the object’s identity was the correct one: it is actually a bug or insect on the camera, not a human ghost in the yard.

Though Discovery thinks the incident was a simply mistaken identity, Romero notes that this is not the first time that something seemingly supernatural has happened at the station. Other officers have reported hearing unidentified sounds, seeing ghost-like images on the station grounds or feeling like someone is breathing down their necks. The station says that no one has died in the station since it was built and officials are not aware of any ancient burial grounds on the property. However, they do note that some murders took place nearby.
