Ohio University Student Senate Secretary Resigns In Wake Of President’s Anti-Israel ‘Blood Bucket Challenge’

The political war on sides when it comes to Israel and the Middle East — specifically Palestine — has exponentially increased its reach, that it now effects politics in universities and colleges. The Inquisitr reported earlier this year about four Ohio University students who were arrested during a student senate meeting because they were pro-Israel. Prior to that, most shows of protest or support would happen in public such as in Chicago, London, and even Washington D.C.

Now Ohio University — specifically the student senate — is in the news again. This time, the Student Senate Secretary has resigned in the wake of the Student Senate President’s anti-Israel promotions such as the “blood bucket challenge.”

According to the Campus Reform, the Student Senate Secretary, Carter Phillips, resigned just a week after four pro-Israel students were arrested protesting Megan Marzec, the Student Senate President, and her anti-Semitic video. Phillips was originally a four-year student senator and was recently elected treasurer. He officially announced his resignation at the beginning of the September 17th meeting. His reasoning is because of the atmosphere in the wake of the Marzec’s controversial “blood bucket challenge.”

For those who do not know what this “blood bucket challenge” is, Megan Marzec released a video garnering national media attention when she accepted the ALS ice bucket challenge. Instead of dumping ice water over her head, the bucket was filled with fake blood. Afterwards, she called for Ohio University to divest from Israel. According to Marzec, the fake blood represents the “thousands of displaced and murdered Palestinians, atrocities which OU is directly complacent in through cultural and economic support of the Israeli state.”

Athens Ohio Today also reported on Carter Phillips’ resignation in which he states more about why he resigned from the Ohio University Student Senate.

“As an organization, Senate used to function with efficiency and was more concerned with actions than its speeches.”

“All legitimacy we had as the student government of this university went out the door in handcuffs last Wednesday. This is no longer a government; it is a circus, and it breaks my heart to see an organization that has the ability to help every student on this campus destroy itself.”

It should also be reported that an Ohio University official confirmed that Carter Phillip’s recommendation for his replacement was unanimously voted into the position the very night he retired.
