Clint Dempsey recently starred in the viral video, “Clint Dempsey asks about Clint Dempsey.” The USA soccer team captain remains safely anonymous while asking soccer questions, because nobody can recognize his face.
American are notorious for not knowing — or caring about — the most popular world sport: soccer. Many people thought that the record-setting ratings for the 2014 World Cup were a sign that soccer was finally catching the public’s attention.
The rumors about soccer’s new-found popularity in America seem to be bit exaggerated. USA soccer team captain Clint Dempsey went around New York to ask some honest questions like, “What do you think about the captain of the U.S. men’s national team, how do you think he did?” and “What was the name of the captain?”
Although everyone seemed to agree that Dempsey did a good job leading the team, they didn’t seem to know much else.
Maybe it’s still a good start.
Sure, no one could recognize Dempsey’s face, but at least they were positive about the team, and the team does deserve it.
In the World Cup, no one had much hope for the U.S.
One person said, “We cannot win this World Cup because we are not at that level yet. For us, we have to play the game of our lives seven times to win the tournament.” The shocking thing is that was the coach.
Nevertheless, the U.S. team surprised the world by actually beating another team, Ghana. And, thanks to a heroic effort by goalie Tim Howard, America nearly won a game outside of the group.
In the end, that just wasn’t enough for Clint Dempsey to become recognizable.
If Dempsey wants the celebrity status, it looks like he’ll have to win two games in the World Cup.
