WWE: The Undertaker Is ‘The Most Overrated’ Professional Wrestler Ever?

The Undertaker is the most overrated professional wrestler of all time, at least if you believe some in the Internet Wrestling Community. Yes, when WWE news weeks are slow, as this one has been, it gives some people time to ruminate on their thoughts and come up with opinions that are sure to be unpopular.

Most of the time they do it just for the sake of attracting eyeballs and getting a rise out of people, but in the case of one unnamed source close to SB Nation‘s Daiello18, the thought is genuine and well thought out, however wrong though it may be.

In a recent piece published to the SB Nation website, Aiello’s friend describes a “venomous hatred” that he has for the professional wrestler known as The Undertaker (aka Mark Calaway).

“As is usually the case with McMahon’s big men, he ascended to main event status almost immediately, without paying any kind of dues or learning the craft,” the writer said. “Following along the lines of Big Boss Man, Akeem, King Kong Bundy, and Big John Studd, The Undertaker found himself in a program with Hulk Hogan, even winning the coveted WWF Championship. Why? God, by which I mean Vince McMahon, only knows.”

Outraged at the fact that “talented wrestlers” like Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels had to work their way up to get to the top, The Undertaker did it on a “mystical gimmick.” Furthermore, characters like Mick Foley (Mankind/Dude Love/Cactus Jack) often put themselves through torment just to help The Undertaker get over with the crowd.

“While Foley bled and broke himself for the sake of the fans and Taker, Taker usually walked out of these matches without a scratch,” the writer continued. “If he did bleed, it wasn’t from the legit beating like Foley did, it was from blading himself.”

Wrapping up, the source said that for two and a half decades, The Undertaker “has killed the momentum of superstars,” adding that he, like John Cena, “isn’t worth a d*** in the ring.”

“He’s [Cena’s] like a cartoon character, a parody of himself. How is he any different from The Undertaker? Why does the WWE hold Taker and John Cena on this pedestal but tear down guys like C.M. Punk?”

While we certainly don’t agree with the full assessment, one thing is certain: The Undertaker is past his expiration date. Brock Lesnar had to carry him through a lackluster WrestleMania 30 match in April that would have put most people to sleep if not for the Undertaker Streak storyline.

If he can’t come back and put on a better show than that next year, we’d just as soon the Deadman fade into legend.

In other recent news surrounding The Undertaker, it was revealed on The Ross Report that ending the streak was a game time decision made four hours before the start of the show.

As for the SB Nation op-ed, how many of you think the writer is crazy, and how many really believe The Undertaker is one of the most overrated pro wrestlers ever?
