Impeach President Obama: Movement May Have Support Of Powerful GOP Leader

An effort to impeach President Obama may have may a powerful new member after Rep. Paul Ryan called out the president for exceeding his authority.

Ryan echoed other top Republicans in saying that Obama has gone beyond the authority of his office.

“I see this sort of a ridiculous game by the president and his political team to try and change the narrative, raise money and turn out their base for an upcoming election that they feel is not going to go their way,” he said at a breakfast sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor. “And I’ll just leave it at that.”

Paul Ryan stopped short of saying he would impeach President Obama — and in fact, admitted that Obama’s transgressions of office does not “rise to high crimes and misdemeanor level” needed for impeachment. But his rhetoric clearly echoed other top GOP members who have been building toward impeachment.

It appears that the impeachment movement has some traction among voters. While Democrats and Independents largely reject the idea of impeaching the president, a full 57 percent of Republicans polled recently said they believe the president should be impeached.

GOP members have faulted Obama on a number of fronts, including his landmark health care reform Obamacare and immigration reform.

While he may not be specifically calling for impeachment, Ryan more or less called Obama a lame duck president.

“We have a broken system that needs fixing for the rule of law, for national security and for economic security. But, having said all of that, there is just no confidence or faith that the president will faithfully discharge his duties in executing and implementing the laws as written by Congress at this time.”

The impeachment debate is growing on both sides of the aisle. Last week, White House representatives said they expect House Speak John Boehner to bring forward articles of impeachment against President Obama, a charge Boehner denies.

The White House also pointed to Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin, who has been one of the leaders of the effort to impeach Barack Obama. One of Obama’s top aides, Dan Pfeiffer, said Palin’s vocal call to impeach Obama has turned the tide for many on-the-fence GOP lawmakers.
