‘Big Bang Theory’ Cast Threatening To Walk? Let It End [Op-Ed]

The Big Bang Theory cast is apparently dragging out the contract negotiations because three of the stars want a million dollars an episode. It may be time to simply cancel the next season and cut some losses, because the show has really been getting less funny.

When the series began, it went for about four seasons with some genuinely funny dialogue and nerd comedy. It was the introduction of girlfriends which may have started the downfall of the humor though.

The show was relatable for the average viewer because it featured a group of outcasts who had almost no luck with women at all. There was even an unspoken running gag where the four (or sometimes three) would head out to meet women and get some sex, and in the end it was usually Raj (Kunal Nayyar) who ended up the only one achieving the goal despite being unable to talk to women sober.

After the introduction of girlfriends Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) and Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik), and Raj’s sudden change when Lucy dumped him, the focus for the Big Bang Theory cast has shifted from nerd humor to relationship problems. Alongside this new trend, the humor has gotten more and more recycled and sometimes forced, usually relying on Sheldon (Jim Parsons) to say something outrageous and get a tension laugh.

The show just isn’t as funny as it was before. Even though season seven has had some fantastic moments, the possibility of the Big Bang Theory cast threatening to walk away if they don’t get an obscene amount of money per episode is enough for me to personally say it’s time to end the series. Johnny, Kunal, Simon, Jim, and Kaley have given some amazing performances, and if they quit, it will be almost impossible to find replacements.

Two and a Half Men, another Chuck Lorre sitcom, failed to maintain its appeal after losing Charlie Sheen and trying to replace him with Ashton Kutcher, and the Big Bang Theory cast could suffer the same fate.

The cliffhanger where Sheldon is forced to deal with more change than he’s willing to handle would actually be a good ending, showing us that the story continues as life goes on, but that’s the end of it for the audience.

Most sitcoms usually end up losing their appeal after the main characters get married, and after Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) got engaged, it signaled a probably fatal shift for the series anyway.

The audience that Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady landed with the first few seasons is losing interest with the changes the series has faced. If the Big Bang Theory cast decides to quit over contract issues, I say the series has had a good run, but it’s time to end it.
