Seven Shot In Indianapolis: No Suspect In Custody After Broad Ripple Shooting

There were seven shot in Indianapolis early Saturday in a popular bar area and police are still sorting through the details of just what happened. IndyStar reports that the incident happened around 2:30 am after a couple of people bumped into one another on a crowded sidewalk and then started shooting.

Authorities indicate that the incident that left seven shot in Indianapolis early Saturday happened as a result of alcohol, streets overcrowded with holiday weekend partiers, and short fuses. The shooting took place in the Broad Ripple neighborhood in the 700 block of Broad Ripple Avenue. Six men and one women were injured in the altercation.

One man, Marcus Clayton, was in critical condition after the incident. Witnesses indicate that he received a gunshot to the head. The other six victims had “non-life threatening” injuries, according to authorities. The latest reports indicate that no arrests have been made. Authorities say that most of the shooting witnesses fled the area, and very few people have stepped up to shed light on who was responsible.

This was the second shooting of multiple people in the area in the past year, and it was the third in the past four years. Police will be looking to work with local business owners to find ways to reduce the congestion that tends to build in the popular area. Business owners indicate that often people congregate in the area wrecking havoc when they aren’t even patronizing the businesses in the area. Many area businesses were left with a lot to clean up after the Saturday morning incident.

One man was detained in the area after he was seen trying to put a pistol into a car. Lawrence Jones, 23, has been charged with possession of a handgun without a license. However, police do not believe he is a suspect in the shooting. WTHR shares that none of the shooting victims had anything to do with the initial argument that left seven shot in the Indianapolis neighborhood.

CNN reports that a separate incident of gunfire in the area on Saturday left a 21-year veteran with the IMPD dead. Officer Perry Renn was killed as he responded to a report of gunfire in an alley. Major Davis Jr., 25, is the suspected shooter in this incident. He was hit with gunfire as well but survived, and authorities expect to charge him with murder. Sadly the Fourth of July weekend apparently brought out the worst in some revelers, leaving seven shot in the Indianapolis Broad Ripple area over something seemingly as simple as a crowded sidewalk.
