Viral Video Not What It Seems: Men Behind Large Fast Food Tips Known For Bizarre Charity Tactics

You may have seen the video above making its rounds on the internet Thursday (July 3): A man handing out hundred dollar tips to fast food workers in restaurants and drive thrus.

While the video appear touching on its surface, the website Mediaite did some digging and found that the money being handed out may be dirty money.

You see, the website Simple Pickup — which is behind the recent viral video — may be tipping fast food workers with money originally given to charity under disgusting circumstances.

“In the video, the guys say that the reason they’re flush with cash is because a charity had returned it to them. There’s some backstory there: a few months ago, Simple Pickup attempted to raise money to fight genital mutilation by bringing a giant sex toy to a public beach and offering to donate money for every woman who rode it, as well as $100 to every 100,000 viewers who saw the video.”

The organization the men tried to give the money to did not appreciate their actions, even if the men said it was for a good cause. More from Mediaite on the response the now-fast food tippers got from the Orchard Project:

“‘The average age of cutting is between 5 and 8 years and so sexual imagery is not appropriate,’ they wrote in a lengthy response to the video. ‘We do not want to shy away from the long term physical and mental health issues FGC causes, but rather to say that from our point of view, this is not the best way to draw attention to these.'”

And apparently this is not the first time the men have done bizarre things to “raise money” for charity.

The Inquisitr reported last year that the men were behind the stunt known as “Motorboating for Breast Cancer,” where one of the men attempts to place his face between women’s breasts and well… you likely know without having to have it spelled out.

Back to today’s Simple Pickup video that is setting the internet on fire, Mediaite called the video “blatantly manipulative” on its surface.

“… it seems pretty obvious that they picked a new hot-button issue — in this case, income inequality — and then turned that into a blatantly manipulative video for the sake of feel-good clicks. Which goes to show you: there are people out there who manage to turn important issues into profitable sources of income. (Hey, they could go work for Upworthy.)”
