Iggy Azalea Just Accomplished Something No Female Rapper Has Ever Done

Iggy Azalea may be a 24-year-old with a handful of songs under her belt, but the rapper just cemented her place among hip-hop royalty like Lauren Hill and Lil’ Kim.

The Australian rapper has now spent six weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with her song “Fancy,” making her the longest-leading No. 1 ever by a female rapper. She just passed Lil’ Kim, whose 2001 collaboration “Lady Marmalade” spent five weeks at the top of the chart in 2001.

There have actually only been four No. 1 songs by female rappers. Lauren Hill spent two weeks at the top for the 1998 song “Doo Wop (That Thing)” and Shawanna was featured on the 2003 Ludacris song “Stand Up,” which spent a week at the top.

As Billboard notes, “Fancy” is drawing quite well across all formats:

“Fancy” continues its Hot 100 command with a third week at No. 1 on Radio Songs, although it decreases by 2 percent to 147 million in all-format audience, according to Nielsen BDS. It logs a seventh week at No. 1 on Streaming Songs, down by 5 percent to 11.1 million U.S. streams, according to BDS. On Digital Songs, “Fancy” drops 2-3 (after leading for four weeks until last week) with 178,000 downloads sold, down 9 percent, in the tracking week ending on June 29, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Iggy Azalea has burst onto the music scene in recent months, and for several weeks held both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on the Billboard chart. Her collaboration with Ariana Grande, “Problem,” enjoyed a long stretch in the second spot before falling of this week.

But her breakout has not been without controversy. Though born and raised in Australia, Azalea has taken on a sound similar to rappers from the southern part of the United States.

Though some fans have raised issues of her authenticity, Iggy Azalea told the UK’s Guardian that she hasn’t heard any of the criticism from her fellow musicians:

“You know the funny thing is. I have never had any musicians tell me that I wasn’t authentic for being white and Australian. Not one. Even I had a warped perception of how I would be received in this business. What I’ve come to realize is that it’s the people who write about music — or who are outside it in some way — who have a problem with what I am doing. The only true insiders are the musicians themselves.”

Iggy Azalea might be hearing less and less criticism the more time she spends at No. 1.
