‘Community’ Gets Sixth Season On Yahoo

The darkest timeline may be over: Community has been given a roll for a sixth season, this time on Yahoo.

After NBC announced last spring that it would not be renewing the perpetually-on-the-bubble cult hit TV show, fans hoped for a miracle. #SixSeasonsAndAMovie became their Twitter rallying cry, with show creator Dan Harmon once saying that if the show got a sixth season miracle, he would make the movie in his basement if he had to.

Harmon better fire up the old Super 8, because 13 episodes of his beloved show will air on Yahoo streaming. Joel McHale and the remaining original cast members will return to the computer screen. Chevy Chase, who infamously walked off the set during Community’s fourth season after a dispute with Harmon, will not be returning, nor will his replacement Jonathan Banks.

As for Donald Glover, who played Abed’s other half Troy, Harmon said at Community’s PaleyFest last March that he would do his best to get Glover back if they got a sixth season. Glover left the show after filming only a few episodes of season five, during what appeared to some people as a nervous breakdown. He posted troubling pictures on Instagram explaining that he often felt overwhelming insecurity and loneliness. His presence on the show was greatly missed by fans.

On getting Glover back, Harmon has said, “I’m just going to go home, kill a chicken, drink its blood, make a ‘Blair Witch’ thing out of its bones, pray to every deity that I have to that if we do get a sixth season that Donald will have tired of his Donald-ness.” We hope the chicken was made comfortable before his sacrifice.

Yahoo announced in April that it planned to bring original TV series to its online offerings, posting a full season at one time like Netflix and Hulu. The first two shows announced were comedies Other Space, from executive producer Paul Feig, and Sin City Saints. While these shows will premiere with eight-episode seasons, Yahoo has promised at least 13 episodes to Community.

Show star Joel McHale expressed his joy over the return of Community saying, “#SixSeasonsAndaMovie is real. Thank you Sony. Thank you Yahoo. Thank you Dan Harmon. And thank you to the greatest f%$#ing fans in the history of the human race. It’s the internet. We can swear now.”

Harmon was similarly jubilant. “I am very pleased that ‘Community’ will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo,” the returning director said. “I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, ‘Big Bang Theory.’ Look out, Bang Bus!”

We’re just relieved that this means all civilizations will not be destroyed by a meteor.

Break out that Dave Matthews Band album, the new season of Community is expected to air sometime in 2015.
