John Lennon And Yoko Ono Explain Love In Rare Footage [Video]

When John Lennon and Yoko Ono met The Beatles fans weren’t welcoming of the couple. Some blamed Yoko for pulling his interest away from the band, and others just didn’t understand why Lennon was with Ono. Their relationship has been defended countless times since Lennon’s passing in 1980, and now fans of the Beatles frontman have more insight into their relationship from a rare interview that just surfaced.

As part of PBS’ Blank on Blank series, John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s interview was unearthed from the vaults and animated to go along with their sound bites. In the episode, which is titled “John Lennon and Yoko Ono on Love” the pair speak openly about love in the form of several concepts. The interview was conducted between 1969 and 1972 by Howard Smith.

Giving a more in depth look to his thought process Lennon spoke about the song “All You Need is Love” to explain his feelings on love.

“When I was singing about ‘all you need is love,’ I was singing about something I hadn’t experienced. I’d experienced love for people in gusts, and love for things, trees, things like that, but I hadn’t experienced what I was singing about.”

Ono met Lennon when the Beatles star was 32 and said at the time she had given up on finding real love and became cynical right before meeting the famous musician. As for Lennon, he said he hadn’t really experienced the love he was selling to crowds until he met his love Yoko Ono.

Describing Yoko, he expresses his love for her “ticking mind” and said the “best part of being with the Beatles when they were ticking was they were ticking, but they began to slow down.” Although that didn’t seem to bother him too much because Lennon said living with Yoko was like living with four or five people at once.

The reason for their marriage? Lennon explains that the pair “turned out to be romantics.” On the intimacy of couples, Lennon said:

“If you love somebody, you can’t be with them enough. There’s no such thing. We don’t want to be apart.”

Perhaps responding to fan reaction John spoke about how strong his love is for Yoko:

“It’s called love. There’s nothing that splits that up. You have to work on it. It is a precious gift, and it’s a plant, and you have to look after it and water it. That’s the secret, it’s all true folks — all you need is love. I can’t give you the formula for meeting the person you love, but it happens.”

In the past the PBS series has revealed interviews with Kurt Cobain, and Jim Morrison.
