New Hampshire Rep. Says Women Don’t Deserve Same Pay As Men

New Hampshire state Rep. Will Infantine (R) went to the house floor Wednesday during a debate on SB207, the state’s Paycheck Equity Act, and declared “Men are more motivated by money than women are.” The vote passed 187-134 and will return to the full house for a final vote.

As reported in Boston.com, Infantine said “Men by and large make more because of some of the things they do. Their jobs are, by and large, more riskier. They don’t mind working nights and weekends. They don’t mind working overtime, or outdoors in the elements.”

“Men work five or six hours longer a week than women do. When it comes to women and men who own businesses- women make half of what me do because of flexibility of work, men are motivated by money than women are. Guys, I’m not making this stuff up!”

New Hampshire governor Maggie Hassan (D) has voiced her support for the bill, saying in January “Today, well over half of the women in our state are either the primary or co-breadwinners in their families. And yet, on average, women in New Hampshire earn 77 cents on the dollar compared to what men earn in comparable jobs. This disparity…also puts further strain on our state budget and hurts our local businesses by taking money out of the pockets of consumers,” huffingtonpost.com reported.

Republicans have repeatedly questioned the statistic that women make 77% of men for the same job.

The inquisitr reported Phyllis Schlafly wrote an op-ed for christianpost.com saying “President Barack Obama and his feminist friends have been trolling out their tiresome slogan that women are paid only 77 cents for every dollar a man earns. Every reputable scholar who has commented has proved that this is a notorious falsehood that anyone should be embarrassed to use.”

Schlafly founded the conservative group Eagle Forum and has been a vocal Republican supporter for many years.

Former Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, who is running for U.S. Senate as a republican, recently came under fire for defending the pay gap after video was uncovered showing her speaking about it in 2010.

“Well, we all like to be paid more and that’s great, but the reality is that women have a different lifestyle. They have kids. They have to take them to get dentist appointments. doctors appointments, all those kinds of things. And they’re more interested in flexibility in a job than pay.”

Democrats and Republicans disagree on many issues. With the political climate being as it is, this argument appears to have staying power.
