Robert Kirkman On ‘The Walking Dead’ Season Five: Is Beth Dead? [SPOILERS]

[Warning, this post contains spoilers for The Walking Dead]

The Walking Dead knows how to leave its fans wanting more. The hit AMC series, created by Robert Kirkman, ended season four on not one, but two major cliffhangers when the group finally made their way to Terminus by season’s end.

The two questions on everyone’s mind revolves around the mysterious community of Terminus. One, are the people there cannibals? And two, is Beth, played by actress Emily Kinney, still alive? When pressed for questions by TV Guide recently, The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman and show runner Scott Gimple weighed in on the topics, giving the usual ambiguous response:

“There is cannibalism in a lot of zombie movies,” Gimple replied when asked about the mysterious room full of candles Rick, Daryl and company passed when unknowingly being herded into their new jail cell. “But, especially with that room, if you’re going to eat somebody, are you really going to put up a candle for them? I don’t think that’s what that room is about.”

Meanwhile, many Walking Dead fans are theorizing that Emily Kinney – who was kidnapped mysteriously during season four – was actually served up to her potential lover Daryl Dixon when they reached Terminus. Robert Kirkman had this to say on the matter of whether Beth turned into BBQ food:

“The Beth BBQ question is a big one. I’ve seen that a lot on Twitter. When a theory is as prevalent as that one is, it’s more than likely not true. If there ever was a story line where we were going a different way and the audience seemed to be ahead of us to that point, it would be extremely unfortunate and I would certainly not feel too good about how well we’re doing our jobs. Thankfully this doesn’t seem to be the case.”

Further fueling the notion that Beth is indeed alive and not being munched on by Terminus cannibals was a recent Instagram photo posted by actress Emily Kinney from the Walking Dead writer’s room:

Now whether or not Beth will be reunited with the group is another matter altogether. Many Walking Dead fans clamored for Beth and Daryl Dixon, played by Norman Reedus to get together romantically last season, but as previously reported by Inquistr, Robert Kirkman thinks the Daryl-Beth ship has a “slim chance.”

At least we know she isn’t BBQ food.

Season 5 of The Walking Dead premieres in October 2014 on AMC.
