Chris Evans Plans To Retire From Acting And Start Directing

Chris Evans makes headlines today because he announced after he’s done filming movies for Marvel, he plans to retire as an actor, and start focusing on a career as a director. In an interview with Variety magazine Evans says:

“I’ve known for a while I wanted to direct. But time never really opens up. There’s another movie to do, there’s another acting job to do. It just got to the point where I was like, you know what, I have to do this.”

Evans already started his directing career when he directed the film called 1:30 Train, which he filmed on Manhattan’s Lower East side during his break from filming for Marvel.

Chris Evans does admit that he was reluctant to sign on to play Captain America in the first place because he wanted to start directing, but he did sign on once Marvel negotiated down to six films instead of nine films. Evans tells Variety magazine:

“The problem was initially, it was a nine-movie contract, and they said, if these movies take off and do very well, and my life changes and I don’t respond well, I don’t have the opportunity to say, listen, I need a f**king break. That just scared me.”

So far Evans has completed two Marvel movies, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier which is going to be released April 4th. The upcoming Marvel films he will be in is The Avengers: Age of Ultron, which comes out in 2015, and Captain America 3, which comes out in 2016. So far that is five movies, and the sixth movie is most likely to be Avengers 3, which could be released in 2017, or later. Evans also tells Variety:

“Without these Marvel movies, I wouldn’t be directing. They gave me enough overseas recognition to green light a movie. And if I’m speaking extremely candidly, It’s going to continue to do that for as long as the Marvel contract runs.”

Unfortunately these are the problems with superhero movies, they can only last for so long, until its time to change things up. Robert Downey Jr. is only signed up for two more Avenger movies, but no more stand alone Iron Man films. Hopefully Marvel has plenty of more different superhero movies they are planning to take the place of characters like Iron Man and Captain America.

Luckily we can still enjoy seeing Chris Evans as Captain America a couple more times.
