Pixar Announces ‘Incredibles 2’ And ‘Cars 3’

Incredibles 2 and Cars 3 are now in the pipeline, according to an announcement by Walt Disney’s CEO Bob Iger this morning. Bob Iger gave the announcement via conference call at an annual meeting for stockholders and D23 members in Portland, Oregon, but gave very few other details.

The long-awaited Incredibles sequel will come over a decade after the 2004 release, which earned Pixar $631 million in box office revenue, making it the fifth highest grossing Pixar film to date. The Incredibles also won Best Animated Feature Prize and Best Sound Editing at the Oscars in 2005. Samuel L. Jackson, voice of Frozone, has been pestering Disney to make an Incredibles sequel, and now fans will get their wish.

The Incredibles director and writer Brad Bird is writing the sequel, which is no surprise considering his statement just last summer that he still wanted an Incredibles sequel. “I have many, many elements that I think would work really well in another [Incredibles] film, and if I can get ’em to click all together, I would probably wanna do that,” he said in May 2013. Bird has directed and written many popular movies for Pixar, including Ratatouille and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and is currently working on Tomorrowland, starring George Clooney, in theaters May 22, 2015.

Also announced was Cars 3, which will be one of many in the popular franchise. The first Cars movie opened in 2006, followed by Cars 2 in 2011, spin off Planes in 2013, and several shorts. Disney tweeted a teaser for another Cars animated short to be released this spring. Planes: Fire and Rescue opens July 18, 2014. The highest grossing film so far was Cars 2 at $560 million worldwide, though the film was less well received than Cars. Together, Cars and Cars 2 have accrued over $1 worldwide.

Cars Land has revived Disney’s California Adventure theme park while the Incredibles characters are best sellers in “Disney Infinity,” a game where players purchase character statues, according to Variety.

Pixar also plans to re-release The Incredibles in 3D later this year. The Incredibles met with high critical acclaim after its initial release, receiving a 90 out of 100 average review score on Metacritic.

It is not yet known when fans can expect Incredibles 2 and Cars 3. Disney already has several movies slated for release in 2015 and 2016, including Tomorrowland, The Good Dinosaur, and Finding Dory. According to Entertainment Wise, unnamed films have been promised for June 2017, November 2017 and June 2018 from Disney, any of which may be the Incredibles or Cars sequels.

It’s probably a safe bet that Samuel L. Jackson will be on board.
