‘Star Trek’ Online For Mac Today

Cryptic Studios has announced that Star Trek Online for Mac has launched today. Star Trek Online for Mac joins the small, but growing crowd of MMO’s for the OS X platform.

Star Trek Online for Mac joins other MMO’s such as the well known World of Warcraft, Guild Wars 2 and EVE Online on the Mac platform which is not traditionally known for being a gaming computer. According to the official press release it has been a highly sought after version of the game.

Star Trek fans have been asking for Star Trek Online on Mac since we launched in 2010. Thanks to the tremendous success we’ve had with the game, we’re excited to be expanding the galaxy again.” said Cryptic Studios CTO & Executive Producer, Stephen D’Angelo. “We know there’s a large gaming community that thrives on Mac and we’re thrilled to finally be able to let them experience Star Trek Online. It simply looks amazing on Mac widescreens.”

Star Trek Online was first revealed at the 2008 Star Trek convention in Las Vegas. The game released to the public two years later in 2010. Since then the game has gone from a subscription model to a Free-to-Play model and has been a successful property for the studio. The Inqusiitr reported the Beta tests for the Mac version started on November 12th, 2013, the same day as the Season 8 content pack dropped and the official Mac client became available to download on the official site this morning which you can do here.

Star Trek Online for Mac takes place in the 25th century, 50 years after the events of the film Star Trek: Nemesis. The peace between the Federation and Klingons is over and both sides are in a bitter war. The Romulan empire is still in disarray after the loss of their home world as depicted in the J.J. Abrams Star Trek film. After a brief tutorial, players serve as Captain of a Federation starship. Or they can become a Klingon Warlord and expand the Empire to the far reaches of the galaxy. With its latest expansion, Legacy of Romulus, players can work to rebuild the Romulan legacy as a member of the Romulan Republic.

The Mac version of Star Trek Online features a stand alone installer and does not require the Arc client which PerfectWorld uses to integrate its titles such as Neverwinter and STO under a single launcher much like EA’s Origin or Valve’s Steam.
