Ariana Grande Tackles Whitney Houston’s ‘I Have Nothing’ At White House Music Event [Video]

Ariana Grande recently tackled one of her idol’s most popular tunes during the Women of Soul music event at the White House.

With President Obama and the First Lady in attendance, Grande launched into Whitney Houston’s iconic tune “I Have Nothing.” The Sam & Cat star, who was obviously battling a case of jangly nerves, proved once again that she has some serious chops when it comes to belting out music. Although nothing really compare’s to Houston’s original, Ariana definitely did the song justice.

In addition to belting out Whitney’s song, Ariana Grande also performed the track “Tattooed Heart” from her debut release Yours Truly. If you’re curious to hear her attempt at “I Have Nothing,” then direct your attention to the clip embedded below. Warning: Your opinion of the performance may differ from others.

It’s no secret that Ariana Grande has nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for Whitney Houston. Since she listened to the late singer’s work as a kid, her decision to perform the track during the Women of Soul event isn’t altogether surprising.

Grande told Digital Spy last year that she listened to a number of artists back in the day that ultimately helped shape her sound. Included in that list were Mariah Carey, Imogen Heap, and Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie.

She added, “[Carey’s] an inspiration — she’s the greatest female vocalist, so [the comparison] was definitely a compliment. Mariah and Whitney Houston were my goddesses growing up.”

Not only did the people who attended the Women of Soul event at the White House seemed impressed with Ariana Grande, folks on Twitter also enjoyed the performance. If you’re at all curious to see what the social media-obsessed masses think of the singer’s rendition of “I Have Nothing,” then check the tweets below.
