Rare White Lion Triplets Born At Poland Zoo

Rare white lion triplets were born at a privately owned zoo in Poland. Andezej Pabich, who runs the Borysew zoo, said cubs are healthy and thriving. Pabich explained the healthy triplets are rare, as white lion cubs are often born with birth defects.

Pabich said 2-year-old Azira gave birth to the cubs on January 28. Although captive lions are more likely to abandon their cubs, Azira immediately accepted and began caring for her triplets. The zookeeper said the lioness has been feeding and grooming her cubs, which are signs of acceptance and affection.

The triplets’ father Sahim was separated from the lioness and cubs. However, he is being kept close. Pabich said the lion becomes agitate whenever anyone approaches his family.

Zoo officials said the cubs will remain inside with their mother until they have gained some weight. Within the next month, the triplets will be weighed, checked to determine their sex, and given names. In April, the white lion cubs will be allowed outside for recreation and public display.

Although white lions are often mistaken for albinos, they are actually the result of a rare genetic mutation. Unlike albinos, white lions’ eyes are usually a beautiful shade of blue. The mutation is incredibly rare, and had only been observed in the Timbavati region of South Africa. The first recorded sighting of a white lion was in 1938. However, African folklore suggests the unique lions were around much longer.

White lions were declared extinct in 1992. However, conservationists introduced three prides into the wild in 2004. Despite conservation efforts, only 90 white lions are known to exist in the wild and in captivity — worldwide. As they are not a protected species, the rare lions are prized by trophy hunters.

The white lion triplets offer new hope to those working to increase their population. Pabich said he and his son both love animals and are dedicated to conservation. Although he is a mechanic by trade, Pabich has a team of veterinarians who help care for the animals.

As reported by ABC News, the small zoo opened in 2008, and has grown to include 80 species of animals. In addition to the white tigers, Pabich has several other rare animals, including white camels. The zoo draws more than 160,000 guests per year. The admission helps the Pabich and his son continually maintain and improve the facility.

Pabich is thrilled that the white lion triplets are thriving. The rare birth is not only good news for his zoo, it is great news for conservationists. The announcement will help raise awareness about the beautiful but endangered species.
