Nadya Suleman: Octomom Charged With Felony Welfare Fraud

Octomom Nadya Suleman is facing more than five years in prison for felony welfare fraud. The mother of 14 is accused of misrepresentation and perjury. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office said the infamous mom falsified an application for public assistance.

Suleman was reportedly approved for free medical care, food stamps, and cash assistance in 2013. Under California law, a family of 15 cannot receive assistance if their income exceeds $119,000 per year. As reported by TMZ, the Los Angeles Department of Welfare Fraud Prevention and Investigation determined Suleman earned nearly $200,000 in 2013.

It is unclear how Suleman earned the extra funds. However, it is suggested that several adult performances, including a pornographic film, may have raised her income over the limit.

Although she was not arrested, Suleman was ordered to appear in court this Friday. The district attorney’s office requested bond be set at $25,000.

Nadya Suleman, also known as Octomom, gained worldwide attention in January 2009, when she gave birth to octuplets. Although she and the babies were at risk, the pregnancy and birth were both a success.

As the birth gained international attention, Suleman was closely scrutinized for her lifestyle. It was eventually revealed that all fourteen of her children were conceived through in vitro fertilization. When she became pregnant with the octuplets she was already on public assistance, as she could not afford to support herself and her six children.

Although she granted numerous interviews and appeared in several reality programs, Suleman continued to fall further into debt. CBS News reports that she eventually filed for bankruptcy. In 2013, she submitted an application for public assistance.

Desperate for extra money, Suleman plead for donations from her family, friends, and her fans. However, she eventually resorted to selling pornographic photographs and appearing in a pornographic film. In the criminal complaint, the district attorney’s office said “she allegedly failed to disclose that she was also getting checks for personal appearances and residuals from videos.”

Octomom Nadya Suleman has faced stark criticism for her lifestyle and parenting skills. However, she is now facing felony charges and five years in prison. Suleman has not responded to or commented on the criminal charges.
