Miley Cyrus Is Officially MTV’s Best Artist Of 2013

Miley Cyrus was recently named MTV’s Best Artist of 2013.

Thanks to her ever-present protruding tongue and her penchant for twerking on everyone from Robin Thicke to Santa Claus, the controversial singer found herself at the top of MTV’s annual list. Regardless of how you feel about Cyrus and her shenanigans, she definitely left her unique mark on the industry this year.

According to The Associated Press, the music videos for Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” and “We Can’t Stop” were the most-watched clips at MTV this year. Additionally, the singer’s MTV artist site received more views than any other performer over the course of 2013.

However, this honor isn’t just about the numbers. Although they certainly influence the decision made by MTV executives, the decision is also made by the performer’s overall impact. Since just about everyone — including her many detractors — couldn’t stop talking about the girl this year, she ultimately found her way to the top of the proverbial pile.

Of course, MTV isn’t the only place Miley Cyrus received kudos in recent days. The Inquisitr reported that the video for “Wrecking Ball” was previously named the most-watched music video of the year over at VEVO. As of this writing, the clip has generated a whopping 397 million views. Chances are it could top 400 million by the end of the year.

Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop” video was the second most-watched video of 2013, amassing an impressive 305 million views since debuting on YouTube five months ago. This doesn’t include the official director’s cut or all of the unofficial clips that were uploaded on various accounts following its release.

Unfortunately, it’s not all good news in the land of awards and honors for Miley Cyrus. The singer didn’t get any love from the 56th Grammy Awards despite all of the music video views and albums sold. She was also named one of the GQ magazine’s least influential people of 2013, an honor that nobody really wants to take home.

According the publication, the singer made the annual list because she was “basically trying every inane strategy she could think of to rile up America’s few remaining pearl clutchers. What’s sad is that it totally worked.”
