Giraffe Riddle Sweeps Facebook: Is The Answer Eyes Or Door?

giraffe riddle

The new ‘giraffe riddle’ which is sweeping Facebook of late is the latest online challenge to go viral, attracting a whole lot of interest and followers.

Here’s the way it works. The deal is that you have to answer a seemingly easy riddle, if you get it correct, all good, if not then you have to replace your Facebook profile picture with one of a giraffe type meme.

The rules of the game state that once you have thought carefully about your answer to the riddle and are ready to post your response, you do so to the one who posted it and not in the comments (for obvious reasons as otherwise you’d give the answer away.)

If you get the answer wrong you have to re-post the riddle which stumped you, once you have changed your profile pic to one of a giraffe.

Here’s a riddle for you:

It’s 3 a.m., the doorbell rings and you wake up. Unexpected visitors! It’s your parents and they are here for breakfast. You have strawberry jam, honey, wine, bread and cheese. What is the first thing you open?

Um, isn’t the answer to that one blatantly obvious? Apparently not, judging by all the giraffe profile pics popping up at an alarming rate on Facebook. On the other hand the ‘giraffe riddle’ challenge is pretty wholesome and harmless fun.

This is, of course, only if you don’t have anything against giraffes and don’t mind having all your Facebook friends seeing that as your profile picture. Fortunately the rules don’t stipulate how long you need to keep the giraffe image in your profile but some reports suggest up to three days.

The answer to the ‘giraffe riddle’ above might not be as easy as you might think. Especially if you take a look at all the comments from people arguing as to what the correct answer is. There is the “eyes” camp and the “door” camp.

What do you think? Do you have to open your eyes or the door first? The riddle seems to be phrased in such a way that it suggests you woke up after the doorbell rang therefore making the correct answer the door.

The answer which received the most likes was this one on the Chicago Tribune’s Facebook page:

Truth be told though, if you were smart and looked to see who it was first, upon realizing it was your parents you’d probably open the wine first, then door.

So what do you think the correct answer to the ‘giraffe riddle’ is? Post it in the comments feed below and don’t worry; whether you get it right or wrong I won’t make you change your picture to a giraffe!

Oh I did answer with the DOOR, Since I am already up and having my Morning Coffee preparing to go to work. I argued my point with my friend that had asked the question. And since she was aware of this fact, she gave it to me as the correct answer. But for most, yea, Eyes would be the answer.

  2. William Collier

Door is the only correct answer… you would not know who was at your door if you had not gone to the door, which requires that your eyes be open. Eyes is wrong.

  3. Jennifer Connors Smith

The riddle doesn't actually specify that you KNOW that's who is there – it's just telling you. But I also thought door, under the assumption that if the doorbell woke you up, you have already opened your eyes.

  4. Krista Spincic

I answered door, but since the riddle states the doorbell woke you up i suppose unless you sleep with your eyese open the answer would be eyes….shucks i am a giraffe lol

  5. Shawna ChildoftheKing Ketron

I said door, I still stick with door, but since I was told that was wrong I went ahead & changed my pic. :)

  6. Kevin Helmes

unless you sleep with your eyes open or you have a photographic memory or ESP you would need to open your eyes first to answer the door

  7. Susan Campbell Flower

If you were asleep…..you would First open your eyes……then get up and answer the door by opening it….if you never opened your eyes…..gonna be hard to open door!!!

  8. Susan Campbell Flower

Can't get to door before you open eyes….you were asleep!!!

  9. Robin Cher Dial

What? lol…I did say door…but was wrong. After thinking about it…you would have to open your eyes first to see where you are going in the house…then answer the door by opening the door. Eyes is the correct answer…not door.

  10. Tonya Napolitano Fuller

I answered door as well although I was told I was wrong but how would I know my parents are there if my eyes weren't open already

  11. Wheeler Danny Williams

The riddle starts its 3 am and the doorbell wakes you. So unless you sleep with your eyes open then your eyes are the first thing you open. Arguing the door is right only makes you look like a pretentious prick who can't handle being wrong and will welch on a bet!

  12. Karen Kennedy Williams

I liked my daughter's answer most of all: "I'd open my MOUTH first to yell, 'It's 3 o'clock in the morning! Go to the flipping Waffle House!!!'"

  13. Melinda Banks

Exactly! People are getting all upset because they insist it was door. Hell, I thought it was door, too, but after giving it thought, the doorbell wakes you, hence you open your eyes…there is your answer. And I enjoy being a giraffe, thank you very much.

  14. Melinda Banks

Because you were asleep, the doorbell rang and you woke up. When you woke up, what did you do? You opened your eyes. Then you went to the door to open the door. The door was the second thing you opened. Now go and make yourself a giraffe.

  15. Paula Flanders

Not sure how you call it welching on a bet? Exactly why did you win if you got it right?

  16. Toh Siew Pat

The question is "What is the first thing you open?".

Taking into consideration the following clues:-
"You wake up" – Your eyes are opened at this point of time.
"Unexpected visitors! It’s your parents" – Goes to show that you have seen them. Eyes already opened.
"Doorbell rings" – The riddle didn't mention about you opening the door. So naturally, the answer should be the door.

However, if the question is "What WAS the first thing you OPENED?". Then "eyes' may be the correct answer.
Depends on how the question is constructed.

  17. Katrina Connor Bond

Susan Campbell Flower, no the riddle says the doorbell wakes you up so unless you walk around awake with your eyes closed, they are already open.

  18. Katrina Connor Bond

Then I'm a pretentious prick because I think it's wrong and just someway for some a hole to get folks to post their pic as a giraffe.

  19. Katrina Connor Bond

If the doorbell woke you up then your eyes are already open. Your answer was the correct one.

  20. Jeff Carpentier

The answer is door. The wine was already open because you drank the whole bottle (along with another) before going to bed. That's why you stumbled to the door eyes wide shut.

  21. Tracey Rodell

I'm usually still awake at 3 am since I have my husband leaving at 2:30 am and my son at 3 am for work. If someone is at my door at 3 am, it's usually one of them and they've forgotten something for work. My eyes are normally open till around 5 or 6 am.. that's when i go to bed.

Door is the right answer for me.

  22. Todd Slater

Hey I said door but when you think about you don't answer the door with your eyes closed. Guess some folks can't take a joke.

  23. Courtney McCaul

First thing for me would be my phone to call 911 because what the hell are you doing coming to my house at 3am?

  24. Krystel Rose Clark

It says u wake up so its ur eyes u can't walk to the door with ur eyes closed

  25. Valerie Morrison

some riddles leave out an important piece when posting. some do not say you were asleep, so in that case it would be the door. now if the awake part is in all the riddles then it would be eyes. hello.

  26. Brittany Cox

Not everyone is asleep at 3 am. Some people have babies or work 3rds. Door is my answer.

  27. Michael Mills

Well since the kids have me awake and my parents have a key. The correct answer is my zipper. I've had to pee for awhile and the babysitters finally arrived.

  28. Kimberly Renee

some of you guys keep saying that people can still be awake at 3am. But that's not what the riddle says. It clearly says, the doorbell "wakes you up".

  29. Ricky Smart

Eyes is the only correct answer! Why is there even a debate? First sentence: "You WAKE UP". Also: How do we even know your parents didn't just let themselves in right after they rang the bell to alert you?

  30. Cindi Brody

I absolutely agree. The poorly-written 'riddle' puts you in a situation where you already have found out certain things. From that point on, the first thing you open is the door. This points out the importance of paying attention to verb tense.

  31. Cindi Brody

But it doesn't ask what DID you open. It states what you know already, then what do you open? Verb tense. It matters.

  32. Tylisa Cuffy

Maybe it's just me and I'm an illiterate jerk who likes to buck the system, but I think neither door nor eyes are correct. Since the word 'open' is in present tense, you can only list things that have not yet been opened, i.e one of the items on the list provided. However had it said 'opened', then I could assume it was speaking of the entire experience after it happened, your parents came, they ate, went home and you went back to sleep but all of that would not necessarily be stated. Then eyes would be correct.

    But that's just me.

  33. Wheeler Danny Williams

I'm saying same type of person. But the very was changing your pic. Whether you consider that winning or not is up to you, but you basically bet your own right to keep whatever profile pic you want

  34. Stacey Hanrahan

Cindi Brody It's not poorly written, it's designed to make you think.

  35. Heather Jones

I add that it depends on the person some of us are awake at that hour meaning we would just answer the door.. Like me and a few other co workers or those with a new baby…

  36. Stacey Hanrahan

The answer is in the riddle, the first thing you opened up when the door bell rang is your eyes.

  37. Richard Fung

I think doors…b/c the question asks what "is" the first thing that you open vs what "was" the first thing that you open…. makes a difference

  38. Jim Godwin

    Just go back to sleep.
But notice i am a giraffe now so I can…..lol

  39. Frank Barnes

Logic 101. When there are more than one possible answers, determine the most probable. It is possible that an AUDIO cue woke you but you kept your eyes closed , had an audio clock provide the time and that kept your eyes closed until AFTER you opened the door or that you have a disability or medical issue preventing opening your eyes. So while possible, neither scenario is very probable. In this case, it is more probable the majority of people would open their eyes before getting out of bed. Anything else that has a chance of being opened first would still be a correct answer.

  40. Stephanie Belcher Cain

But if they are unexpected how do you know they are at your house for breakfast unless you have opened the door? You would have to have opened the door to talk to them to find out why they are there, just as you would have opened your eyes to be able to get out of bed and see that it is your parents ringing your doorbell at 3 am. Therefore, eyes is the correct answer.

  41. Jean Spoor

For those who are saying that you have to open the door to know it's your parents…I don't open my door until I peek out the window to see who it is, especially at 0300…

  42. Lindsey James Hairsylist

I'm sorry, but the riddle says "it's 3 am, the doorbell rings, and you WAKE UP" generally when you wake up, you open your eyes. SO, the first the that you would open, would be the door!!

  43. Alfonso Quilantan

i still say it's door.. how else would you have known it was your parents at the door….

  44. Michelle Girard

Eyes. The riddle begins "it is 3 o'clock in the morning . . ." everything after that introductory phrase is an element of the riddle–where you were, what you were doing, what you heard, how you responded, who was the author of the action, what action followed from the initiation action . . . Eyes. But I agree with Karen Kennedy Williams–the next thing would be my mouth and the word flippin replaces would be among those said loudly and often!

  45. Patrick Thomas

After reading the riddle, the first thing I opened was my message box.

  46. Mish N Mark

Alright, enough already. The question of what do you open first is posed AFTER it is stated that the doorbell awoke you. Eyes can't be right because the implication is there that they already are open. Game. Set. Match.

  47. Leslie Rhodes

Seems to me, by the wording of the riddle, your eyes and the door have already been opened revealing the time and the visitors; therefore the only thing left to open is one of the food items. If its 3am and your parents, chances are it will be the wine.

  49. Mike Casella

They are right. You don't have to open your eyes to answer the door. But with that logic, (if it was me), then the first thing I'd open is my fly. That way I could pee first before I'd go and answer the door.

  50. Laurence Shipman

If they're ringing my doorbell at 3 am, they better be yelling "Don't shoot, it's your parents". Opening they door isn't necessary to know who it is.

  51. Amanda Mathis Leggett

I would first open eyes, then upon seeing the time and who was at my door open the door, followed by opening the wine, bread and cheese…. because i know it doesnt take much wine to give my parents a buzz for them to go to sleep and the bread and cheese just to prevent them from getting fully drunk.

  52. Lori Richards

That is exactly that my husband said too. I said eyes he said door. I think the way its written both should be counted right.

  53. Adam Brosemann

Seriously, very simple riddle. Eyes is the correct answer. Takes an intelligent person about five seconds to figure that one out!

  54. Scotty P Morris

but the riddle also states that you're woken up and you know it is your parents at the door, so what is the first thing you open? the way it is phrased implies what is the first thing you open now that you're awake and are aware your parents are at the door.

  55. Scotty P Morris

Stacey Hanrahan the question isn't what you "opened" it's what you "open". you opened your eyes when the door bell rang, but the first thing you open is the door.

  56. John Emery

Here's the easy way to think about it: The first line is "3:00 am, the doorbell rings and you wake up." and the last line is "What is the first thing you open?" Ignore everything between which is just distracting filler, and the answer can only be EYES. :)

  58. Don McGrath

Is it possible to wake up without opening your eyes? Can you be awake with your eyes closed? If your answer here is yes then you open your eyes AFTER waking up, but BEFORE you open the door.

  59. Nerissa Noche

Its door unless you dnt have eyes.
    :)
its eyes unless you dont have mind :)
    Ok?

  60. John Emery

The tense is consistent in the riddle and therefore is a moot point. Here's the easy way to think about it: The first line is "3:00 am, the doorbell rings and you wake up." and the last line is "What is the first thing you open?" Ignore everything between which is just distracting filler, and the answer can only be EYES. :)

  63. Kristina Gajderowicz

The answer is door it spec says thing which is singular and materialistic eyes are plural

  64. Napuaokalani Kapea

Yeah too late tho u already messaged me "an answer" nah nah its all G two of my peeps got it wrong and still neva change their pic

  65. John Emery

Nope, you were fooled by all the distracting words. Here's the easy way to think about it: The first line is "3:00 am, the doorbell rings and you wake up." and the last line is "What is the first thing you open?" Ignore everything between which is just distracting filler, and the answer can only be EYES. :)

  66. Sheri Pivonka

you have to.open your eyes in order to get to the door so eyes is the correct answer I wouldnt walk to the door open it then open my eyes too dangerous and I would fall over or into something at my.house lol

  67. Michelle Stockwell

I'm going with door. It says THING. Eyes would be thingS. The door is the first singular thing you open.

  68. John Emery

OK you had me with your first sentence when you answered the riddle with "eyes" so I don't understand the logic of your 2nd sentence when you changed to "door." Here's the easy way to think about it: The first line is "3:00 am, the doorbell rings and you wake up." and the last line is "What is the first thing you open?" Ignore everything between which is just distracting filler, and the answer can only be EYES. :)

  69. John Emery

Actually the tense of the riddle is consistent and therefore a moot point. Here's the easy way to think about it: The first line is "3:00 am, the doorbell rings and you wake up." and the last line is "What is the first thing you open?" Ignore everything between which is just distracting filler, and the answer can only be EYES. :)
