Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Crimson Peak’ Begins Filming This February

Guillermo del Toro’s horror flick Crimson Peak will begin shooting early next year.

The Pacific Rim director is shifting gears a bit for his next cinematic endeavor. Instead of putting together another big-budget spectacle, del Toro is aiming for something very scary and a bit more intimate.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the horror flick is going under the name Haunted Peak while it shoots at Pinewood Toronto Studios. The website explains that Guillermo del Toro’s latest movie will shoot between February and May of next year.

Matthew Robbins, who wrote the script for the filmmaker’s 1997 sci-fi flick Mimic, helped out the script for Crimson Peak. However, The Crimson Petal and the White scribe Lucinda Coxon provided a rewrite of their original draft.

If you’re worried that Crimson Peak will hit theaters as Haunted Peak, the folks at Deadline explain that you shouldn’t spend too much time stressing about it. The industry website assures Guillermo del Toro fans that the flick is keeping its original title.

Charlie Hunnam, Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, and Mia Wasikowska are slated to appear in the director’s horror movie. Although Benedict Cumberbatch was originally counted among the cast, he was ultimately forced to drop out. The reasons for his departure are currently unknown.

Crimson Peak tells the story of a writer who discovers there’s more to her husband than meets the eye. If the flick is anything like the director’s previous forays into the genre, moviegoers should anticipate plenty of scares and a large helping of suspense.

Guillermo del Toro said his upcoming horror movie will likely receive an R-rating. The filmmaker told Slashfilm earlier this month that the violence won’t dominate the entire film.

He explained to the website:

“At the same time, it’s a sincere, beautiful, classical gothic romance that’s very violent and very kinky, in a way. What’s a complete dream is the cast — Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska, and Charlie Hunnam. It’s amazing. We’ve also been designing the house to the last little corner, and it really is a monumental character in the film. I hope it’s going to be my most beautiful movie.”

Once Guillermo del Toro finishes work on Crimson Peak, he will begin shooting the upcoming FX drama The Strain. The series, which is based on his novel of the same name, deals with a plague that transforms ordinary human beings into blood-sucking creatures.
