The XCOM: Enemy Within ‘War Machines’ trailer has dropped.
The expansion to the 2012 turn-based tactical role-playing game XCOM: Enemy Unknown is on its way, though not much is known about it thus far. The game is about an alien invasion where your group of elite fighters are tasked with defending the planet. One could almost argue that it’s the slower paced spiritual successor to Space Invaders , but that’s beside the point.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown was critically acclaimed across the board for its difficulty and ability to keep gamers coming back for more, and even more of the game is on its way in an expansion pack called XCOM: Enemy Within . As the trailer tells us, the aliens have unleashed a wider variety of threats and in order to keep up, we need to inject our soldiers with alien parasites which enhance their combat effectiveness, giving them alien abilities.
The XCOM: Enemy Within ‘War Machines’ trailer begins with an authority figure in a dark room with a bright light behind him. He says:
“Hello, Commander. The enemy has deployed deadly new units to the battlefield. We require more … capable operatives to counter this threat. And a newly discovered alien substance will allow us to create them. You may choose to augment your soldiers biologically, or enhance them with the latest cybernetic technology. Those who volunteer for these procedures will sacrifice much, but they will gain a substantial increase in combat effectiveness.”
The XCOM: Enemy Within ‘War Machines’ trailer shows us creatures with cloaking abilities appearing out of nowhere and killing soldiers completely unprepared to deal with the new threat. A mech soldier appears through a sort of barrier following a handful of these creatures and prepares for battle.
Some glowing triangular cells appear floating in liquid before we see an almost X-ray view of a human heart and brain being altered. A man emerges from a tank and then approaches a mech suit. Then we’re treated to a barrage of battle scenes showing off what’s to come.
It looks like the XCOM: Enemy Within ‘War Machines’ trailer is preparing you for a whole new level of combat in XCOM: Enemy Unknown .
