Shortly after Kofi Kingston, Big E, and Xavier Woods debuted their newest act , The New Day, many believed that it would only be a matter of time before the fans turned on the trio because of their over-the-top positive attitude, and, well, that’s exactly what ended up happening.

The fans turning on The New Day became apparent at this year’s Royal Rumble , and the boos continued through WrestleMania , which is where all three members of the team approached Vince McMahon about turning the team heel.

All three members of The New Day appeared on Chris Jericho’s podcast on Wednesday. They talked about their transition from being “white meat” babyfaces to being one of the best heel teams in the company. Kofi Kingston also revealed what Vince McMahon’s reaction to the fans turning on The New Day was, saying that Vince was baffled when the team didn’t get over.

“The day after WrestleMania , it was ‘New Day Sucks!’ 100 percent of the time we were out there. So, at that point, it was like, if we were going to turn, we have to do it now. So, we went straight through the gorilla position, and we pulled Vince aside and said, ‘Hey, can we talk to you tomorrow? I know you heard that reaction.’

“At first when he gave us that idea, we said that we would try it out, and if it didn’t work we said that we would go heel, but in [Vince’s] mind, it was going to be the greatest babyface thing ever. When we turned, we went in and talked to [Vince] and he said, ‘I really thought that this was going to be a big babyface deal, and I thought people were going to be getting behind it.’”

There have been some people who have accused Vince McMahon of being out of touch with what the WWE fans want, and those people will point to this as an example of McMahon being out of his mind. But, sometimes in the wrestling business, you just never know what will catch on. Granted, when most people initially saw The New Day, they thought that the idea sucked, which is why they turned on the team so quickly.

Since their turn, The New Day have become one of the most entertaining teams in WWE, and they could end up regaining the tag-team titles at SummerSlam , as they’ll likely be taking on the Prime Time Players for the gold on August 23.
