Hulk Hogan can’t seem to let his wrestling career go, and now he’s upped the ante from saying he wants one last match at WrestleMania 31 to saying that he wants one last title run.
Yes, you read that correctly. Hulk Hogan, WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
In an interview with the Sioux City Journal , Hogan had this to say.
“Triple H told me I’ve got nothing to prove but the last time I wrestled was not with this company and I want my legacy to end with the WWE…. Vince [McMahon] said, ‘Never say never.’ And that’s what I want — one last match, one last run, one last title win, one last title retirement.”
To hear Hulk Hogan say it, the idea is not that ridiculous. After all, that movie The Wrestler was popular, and people seem drawn to those “one last time” stories. Plus, there’s this.
“Thanks to social media, I’m hotter than I was in the ’80s and ’90s. When I go through airports now, young kids — 4 and 5 years old — will come up to me and say, ‘You’re my favorite wrestler’ and I don’t even wrestle anymore. But they see [the matches] on the Internet and they know what I can do. If this all works out, Hulk will really become immortal. It’s where my home is. It’s where I belong.”
Cageside Seats’ Geno Mrosko, for many, summed this up best.
“The idea of a 61-year-old Hulk Hogan winning the WWE world heavyweight championship is utterly ridiculous,” wrote Mrosko.
But if the company were going to allow it — and there is a very slim chance of that — how would they do it, and would they be making a huge mistake?
It’s hard to see the Hulkster stepping in the ring with someone like Brock Lesnar and not getting killed. Still, one of the last times they met — a meeting Lesnar won — it was a surprisingly good match. Of course, Hogan was considerably younger than he is now, even at that late stage in his career.
If you were going to set it up plausibly, having Hogan show up to save a beaten and bloodied John Cena at Royal Rumble would be the way to go.
From there, Lesnar could issue a challenge to the “old man,” and then you would just have to keep the two apart until WrestleMania . It wouldn’t be hard building a sense of dread for the “old dog.”
The only hard part? How would you make a Hulk Hogan win feasible?
