According to USA Mega’s handy lottery analysis chart, tonight’s $106 million jackpot has a cash value of $64.5 million. After federal taxes are deducted, the winner will get a check for $48,375,000 if they live in a state where lottery winnings are not taxed . Otherwise, expect to have even more money deducted, depending on your state’s tax rate.
For example, if you live in South Carolina, you will get a one-time payment of approximately $43,860,000 after federal taxes ($16,125,000) and state taxes ($4,515,000) are taken out.
Jackpot winners who choose a 30-year annuity will get their first payment shortly after the ticket is validated by lottery officials. After that, a check will be mailed — or direct deposited — once per year. The yearly payment for the July 10 Mega Millions jackpot would be approximately $3.5 million before federal and state taxes are deducted.
There hasn’t been a jackpot winner since June 2 when one lucky ticket holder won $260 million. According to the Chicago Tribune , the winning Mega Millions ticket was purchased at a supermarket in the Blue Island area of Chicago.
The jackpot winner still hasn’t come forward to claim the prize, but the store that sold the winning ticket received a $500,000 bonus from the state lottery. Delores Diaz, the manager of Super Mercado Imelda market, tells CBS that she will use the money to pay off some bills.
