William Shatner will be hosting the first officially licensed Star Trek: The Cruise in 2017, according to the cruise’s official website . While some may be trying to figure out what Star Trek costume is appropriate to wear on the high seas, Shatner says he knew that his involvement in the cruise was paramount in ensuring Trekkies had a good time.
“I just knew that my participation would be something that our fans would enjoy. It should be a lot of fun,” Shatner said of the cruise. 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of Star Trek and what better way to mark a sci-fi marriage of such magnitude than cruising with Shatner’s Captain Kirk himself?
Trekkies will also be excited to know that the cruise will include other Star Trek alumni along with Shatner, including Star Trek: The Next Generation ‘s Commander Riker, Jonathan Frakes and his fellow Next Generation co-stars Marina Sirtis, John de Lancie, and Denise Crosby, as well as co-stars from Voyager and Deep Space Nine .
The six-day Star Trek cruise will depart from Miami and be limited to around 2,200 travelers with fares starting at $975 per person. There’s no word on whether or not William Shatner used his amazing Priceline Negotiator skills to secure that deal. However, Shatner and the other Star Trek actors will be participating in various activities with their cruise ship guests throughout the voyage.
As an added bonus, Star Trek fans will also get to experience a cruise ship decorated with sets and themes from the show. William Shatner undoubtedly hopes that no tribbles will be aboard.
While there have been other Star Trek- themed cruises in the past, this is the first one to be officially sponsored by CBS products. As noted in a previous Inquisitr article , CBS had hit a sore spot with Star Trek fans with its refusal to develop any new television series based on the franchise. Perhaps being able to reel in a big fish like William Shatner for the cruise will put CBS back in the good graces of Trekkies.
Though Shatner will be nearly 86-years-old by the time the Star Trek cruise sets sail, William still remains relevant in the acting world and Shatner’s turn as Captain Kirk has made him timeless. And with the cruise still being a year and a half away, who knows? Perhaps the cruise line can figure out a way to get George Takei on board and treat fans to a William Shatner versus George Takei speedo contest.
